I found it a photo of our main bathroom door in the old house, as designed & painted by the kids... per twitter discussions about how T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" gets stuck in your head and scribbled all over the walls of one's life.
what we can do is make people more free: widen their vision, deepen their powers of thought, awaken them to the scope of their own freedom. they become capable of greater good and greater evil. but this, i think, is still better. it's better for a human being to think than serve
this also gets lost in too many discussions about education and "great books." there is no way to teach honestly and at the same time to be certain of the result. education doesn't produce goodness and never did. our curricula will not make students better or worse

Agree. Joe Biden and Congressional leaders have an opportunity to demonstrate moral clarity in this moment. They should do so. The slaughter of Israelis on October 7 was wrong, and the slaughter of innocent civilians in Gaza with disproportionate force is wrong. Need a ceasefire.
Judi Dench was on Graham Norton last night to push her new book about her life and work with Shakespeare. After making the point we quote Shakespeare daily without knowing it, this happened:

Here's the share of each state that was atheist, agnostic, or nothing in particular in 2008 and 2022.
In 2008, there were high concentrations of nones on the West Coast and the Northeast.
By 2022, the nones had risen above 35% in almost every state in the union.
When you view children as sinful or evil, you are more likely to misinterpret developmentally appropriate behavior as sinful or evil—and thus more likely to punish them for just being children.
