HOW TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON - A CONTINUING SERIES:
Say you're somebody who wants to really understand what's going on in the world, but you're not a borderline-autistic obsessive who wants to constantly refresh news feeds. How do you do it? Let's talk about that.
Somebody said that Apple is in their Taco Bell era where they're just smashing together random leftover parts from other devices and naming them things like "Phonedito Supreme Crunch" and it's the perfect analogy. Here slap a touch screen on this, charge $4k and call it a Maclupa
This is good, except I might rank 20s and 30s above childhood because you have so many more options and opportunities open to you. Although being able to play all the time without responsibilities is pretty great. Adolescence is a mess and I'm glad it's well behind me.
I'm at 55 now, and just starting to soak up all the senior discounts, which is pretty great. 50s are at least equal to 40s.
This right here. There's a lot of fancy-shmancy academic-sounding language that's just a smokescreen for an old fashioned power struggle. Don't overthink it.
THE FIGHTING ON THE “RIGHT” EXPLAINED:
Don’t be confused by the pseudo-sophisticated talk of vast conspiracies, hidden puppeteers, and talk of “post-liberal” bullsh*t. In an attempt to explain the infighting on what is allegedly the “Right” — but is mostly Leftists — people are connecting dots that don’t actually connect. To follow them is like taking your political cues from Dwight Schrute.
I get it. People have a deep need for answers, and these people fill that emotional void. But this doesn’t require complicated narratives or great political savvy to understand:
What you are seeing is the inevitable unraveling of a Trump coalition that had no real “we hold these truths to be self-evident” ideological anchor. He knew he had authentic conservatives/evangelicals already. To them he cleverly added those who aren’t conservatives, they are merely anti-woke: people like Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, and RFK, Jr. I mean, he platformed an unrepentant pro-abortion porn star at the RNC. That’s taking “big tent” politics to a whole new level.
The strategy worked insofar as Trump won the presidency. But now elements of the merely anti-woke crowd, none of whom are Christian, are at the throats of authentic conservatives in a bid for control of the Republican Party.
Various interested parties, both foreign and domestic, are throwing their weight behind their preferred faction. It’s no more complicated than that.
Does that mean there aren’t actual puppeteers? No. They exist as they have always existed in politics. But don’t make them bigger boogeymen than they really are. Their chief influence is in adding to the social media noise, fueling division, and creating or suppressing narratives. They amplify the messages of those horses they’re backing while simultaneously demoralizing their opponents.
Finally, there is also a strong non-ideological element to this teapot tempest that pretends to be ideological. You are seeing people tilt at Twitter windmills, not in defense of a political platform, but in defense of a friendship that the other side demands be renounced: “You won’t renounce Tucker, therefore you agree with Tucker….” “You were on Steve Bannon’s show, therefore you are aligned with Bannon…” etc., etc. Most people have no ideology at all; they have relationships. And most find it very difficult to publicly attack a friend who has done them a service — even when that friend has gone off the rails. It’s human nature.
My advice?
Ignore all of it and make better use of your time.
Remember when a flood wiped out a bunch of villages in Nepal a couple of months ago? I feel like, in decades past, that would be the kind of thing that got tons of news coverage and a big fundraising concert and all that. But not anymore. Hey did you hear Jennifer Lawrence got a facelift?
@KurtSchlichter In the Trump era, the press collectively decided to become that character from a horror movie whose whole job is to say, "c'mon guys, that's just a crazy old wives tale"
Remember back when there were tube TVs, with a thousand different knobs that could adjust the picture every which way? There was always that one clown who thought he could make the picture better by tweeking this knob just a liiittle more, and then he would run it. That guy is now a plastic surgeon in Hollywood.
Yes, the particulars of this post season especially (with the importance of fundamentals, base running, defense, etc) have shown that there are limits to the ongoing bananaballification of the sport. I like the Bananas, but I like baseball too. #WorldSeries
A conversation that has happened many times in banking, with various flavor texts, from fintech to public banking to microfinance.
A: We think there is an opportunity to write loans to an underserved population.
B: At usuriously high rates?
A: No, at usual rates. Maybe lower.
