Operation Trikora 1961-New York agreement 1962 -----------------------
TRIKORA 19 DECEMBER 1961 WAS THE BEGINNING OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN PAPUA
Even though West Papua has declared itself as an independent and sovereign country, on December 1, 1961, the independence was only 19 days old, because on December 19, 1961 President Soekarno issued the People's Tri Command in Yogyakarta North Square which contained:
1. Failed the Formation of a "Papua Puppet State" made by the Colonial Dutch
2. Raise the Red and White Flag in West Irian, Indonesia
3. Be prepared for general mobilization to defend independence and the unity of the Motherland and the Nation. Realization of the contents of this Trikora, then President Soekarno as Commander in Chief of the Supreme Command for the Liberation of West Irian issued Presidential Decree No. 1 of 1962 which ordered the Commander of the Mandala Command, Major General Suharto to carry out a military operation in the West Irian region to seize the area from Dutch hands. Finally several waves of Military Operations were carried out in West Papua with military units dispatched for operations by air in the infiltration phase such as Operation Banten Kedaton, Operation Garuda, Operation Wolf, Operation Kancil, Operation Dragon, Operation Rajawali, Operation Lumbung, Operation Jatayu. Operations by sea are Show of Force Operations, Cakra Operations, and Dolphin Operations. Meanwhile, in the exploitation phase, Operation Jayawijaya and Special Operations (Opsus) were carried out. Through this operation the territory of West Papua was occupied, and it was suspected that many Papuans had been massacred at that time. In order to deceive the eyes of the world, the process of taking over power in West Papua was carried out legally through international legal channels by including the West Papua issue on the agenda of the UN General Assembly in 1962. From within the UN General Assembly the New York Agreement was drawn up on 15 August 1962 containing “Act of Free Choice” (Free Choice Statement). The Act of Free Choice was later translated by the government of the Republic of Indonesia as PEPERA (Statement of People's Opinion) which was implemented in 1969.
