@AnnMIronsCPALLC@bsuecannon I did 866 personal returns Jan to April. Some are simple and other are more complicated. I have 3 people helping with the input but I review everything. I work too many hours. The biggest problem is that 3-15 comes around half of the 866 show up and that’s what kills me .
If you’re planning to schedule tax prep, it’s time to start communicating with your clients. Here’s a suggested timeline, and email templates in the comments.
I recently shared how my minimum tax return fee went from $449 to $2,000 and got a bunch of great questions.
Here are my answers!
𝗪𝗵𝘆?
- In the first few years of firm ownership, I used pricing as a way to slow down new client meetings because I was at capacity
- More recently, my fees have gone up because the base level of services has increased in value
- I'm trying to work with the specific client profile, clients who value a relationship with their tax pro
𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀?? 𝗜𝗳 𝗻𝗼𝘁, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗡𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝟮 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝟭𝟬𝟰𝟬?
- No, maybe 3 millionaires out of about 120 clients
- I don't think anyone wants to pay $2,000 for a 1040
- It's how you sell what comes with that 1040 that makes the difference
𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆?
- The $2k fee includes tax return prep, a video summary of their tax return, document storage, newsletter, year round access for quick questions and IRS notice assistance
𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 $𝟮𝗸 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵, 𝘀𝗮𝘆, $𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬, $𝟭,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗼𝗿 $𝟭,𝟴𝟬𝟬?
- Depends on the package they select, but short answer, kinda
𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀?
- Just new clients
- But I have increased the fee for my “old” clients to a price point where I feel good about
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲—𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼𝘀, 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹, 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹?
- Client who gets a >25% price increase gets an email before proposals go out explaining why
𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿, 𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀?
- Yes, making more per hour is exactly why I've raised the rates
- 4 lower paying clients are going to take more time and give you more headaches than 1 higher paying client
- I cannot see why anyone would prefer to have 4X more clients
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲?
- It could be a “simple” 1040
My son asked if I could pick up some bulk frozen chicken at Costco for him.
He's a college senior. Many of the people he knows spend $400/month on DoorDash.
While his friends are financing expensive cars, losing money on sports betting apps, and moving into new luxury apartments, he's asking me to grab chicken on sale.
They think he's cheap.
I see this exact pattern destroy my clients' kids and grandkids all too often.
Here's what most parents don't realize:
Their 23-year-old just graduated with $45,000 in student loans at 7% interest.
That's $522/month for 10 years. Total paid: $62,640.
But the real cost isn't just the money.
That same $522/month invested from age 23 to 33 becomes $95,000. Left until retirement at 70 it's worth $1.5 million.
The real cost is the habits they're building. Financing everything they can't afford becomes normal.
Here's what I show parents and grandparents who can afford to help:
You can gift $19,000/year per child tax-free. $38,000 if married.
Pay off that student loan debt immediately while they're 23 and living modestly.
Then teach them to redirect that $522/month into their Roth IRA instead.
The gifting strategy matters. But the habits matter more.
My son worked for scholarships. We helped with the rest. He graduates debt-free in May.
But more importantly, he learned to shop sales, cook at home, and live below his means before the income arrived.
His friends are learning the opposite. Financing lifestyle. Betting on apps. $50 wings delivered.
Those habits don't disappear at $75,000 salaries. They expand.
After 25 years helping affluent families, here's what I know:
The best inheritance isn't money at 65.
It's teaching financial habits at 23 and strategic gifting that eliminates debt before lifestyle inflation makes saving impossible.
My son is asking me to grab bulk chicken on sale.
His friends think he's missing out.
In 20 years, he'll have freedom while many will be drowning in debt.
🚨 BREAKING: This Venezuelan man is going viral for explaining to everyone why Maduro NEEDED to be toppled
The Democrats are clueless.
“Venezuela has already been invaded.” 🔥🇺🇸
He knows his country.
The people are ecstatic.
