Ohio has implemented a ban on the prolonged use of restrictive metal gestation crates for pregnant sows, effective as of January 2026 (following the rule's activation on December 31, 2025).
This marks the final step in a 15-year effort stemming from a landmark 2010 agreement between animal welfare advocates and major Ohio agricultural groups. The narrow metal enclosures—roughly 7 feet long and barely wider than the pig—prevent sows from turning around or fully extending their limbs during most of their pregnancy, contributing to physical issues like lameness and skin sores, as well as psychological distress shown through repetitive behaviors such as bar-biting and signs of depression.
Under the new regulations (codified in Ohio Administrative Code), gestation crates are now restricted to only a brief early phase of pregnancy—specifically to support embryonic welfare and confirm pregnancy—after which sows must be housed in group systems that allow greater movement, socialization, and natural behaviors. Note that farrowing crates (used briefly around birthing) remain permitted.
Ohio now joins 10 other states (making it the 11th) in limiting this extreme confinement practice, aligning with growing national trends seen in places like California and Michigan. The change reflects a broader shift in the pork industry toward standards informed by modern animal welfare science, balancing production needs with improved conditions for breeding pigs. This long-awaited reform highlights bipartisan and stakeholder-supported progress in reducing inhumane intensive farming methods.
This is Lucy 🐓 👇
Lucy has been confined in a cage on an egg farm for about 18 months. Because hens have been selectively bred to lay almost an egg a day, her body and reproductive system are exceedingly overburdened.

Very urgent, please retweet to help Paddy and Brian find a home together #BigginHill#Kent#UK 💔💔
We are seeking an urgent long term foster home for brothers who have sadly ended up in rescue at nearly 16 years old after their owner passed away. Kennels is no place for an elderly dog, they need a loving retirement home and Foal will support any ongoing medical care they need.
Details or apply below👇

Considering their lives have been turned upside down, the boys have taken it in their stride. Paddy is a real cheeky chap and on the larger side so is on a diet. He struggles with arthritis so can only manage short walks and loves nothing more than a belly rub. Brian was a little more reserved but is coming out of his shell slowly and is also a sweetheart, he enjoys going for a gentle stroll.
The boys are good around dogs and could live alongside others. Preferably a calm dog/dogs, due to their elderly age.
They are both due some ongoing vet work as they have a few health concerns, which is to be expected at their age. Ideally their fosterer needs to be local to Foal for vet trips, please note Foal will cover any costs of their ongoing care. We just want them to be back in a loving home where they belong. They are best suited to an older family with a calm environment, so they can enjoy a peaceful retirement.

WomenAreReal has uncovered that the same naked man has been regularly entering women’s locker rooms at multiple Bay Area YMCAs. He’s been at the Stonestown YMCA nearly every day since August 2024, w/confirmed sightings at Presidio, Embarcadero, & Berkeley locations. 🧵
“He also likes to blow dry his hair while naked and bent over. I've seen that man more than most of my boyfriends.”
Since August 2024 this dude has been hanging out for hours naked in the women’s locker room at Stonestown YMCA in San Francisco. 🧵
