@FarmerSimonC I’m on heavy land but not that heavy. And I have got round this problem by growing a rotation of osr wheat beans wheat.
No second cereals,break crops having larger woody roots to give improved infiltration over winter.

@FarmerSimonC Hi Simon, could this be more due to lack of N after a cereal which the limiting factor. Either mineralised in the autumn or spare in the soil.
