@alexbud22 With such an emphasis at the end of the novel on how Joe chose to remain in Lark with Geneva, I found that to be similar to Locke's family ties in Texas. This shows that even the small details in the novel add to the family story of Attica Locke. #WritingAboutTexts

The end of the novel was satisfying, but not to the extent that I was expecting. Locke explained the details of Joe’s murder well, as well as the solving of the Michael and Missy murders, but the epilogue made it difficult to be fully satisfied. #WritingAboutTexts

I found that the setting in this passage on p.141 increased the intensity in an already dramatic scene, as it emphasized not only the shots coming at Darren and Randie, but also the potential of hazardous driving in the bayou that could put them in danger. #WritingAboutTexts

@ashsuttner I noticed the same types of tropes with Darren, and although they seem similar to lots of other works in the genre, tropes are in place because readers enjoy them. In the case of this novel, I think his character really fits the mood that Locke is going for. #WritingAboutTexts

@CastelliOlivia I had a similar thought to this while reading-there always seems to be a protagonist in the genre that have a desire for the truth, and have no other care or the want for their own protection. Darren certainly fits this category. #WritingAboutTexts

After having the setting conversation in class, it was very apparent in the dialouge and descriptions that the setting of East Texas is going to be an integral piece of the narrative. I enjoy this, as it makes every little detail of information seem relevant. #WritingAboutTexts

@CastelliOlivia I agree with you here. I feel like this conversation happens with any genre, including mystery. Some dislike the amount of times tropes are used, but they are used since readers enjoy them, so authors shouldn't be condemned for using them. #WritingAboutTexts

What I liked most about the article was the background that was provided about Locke's time spent writing the novel. Taking a year off to really focus on her writing certainly paid off, and it is something that I found very interesting.

I found this article interesting as it focused on the overall setting of mystery novels, and gave examples of novels that utilize a "swapy setting". The article helped me understand that there can be a mystery set in many settings. #WritingAboutTexts

@Ren_Maloney I also found this to be interesting. I think it was done to show that Malcolm does actually have good intentions, since his character is founded on being able to be deceitful and convince others of his lies. With his chapters, we can know his true feelings. #WritingAboutTexts

@EHeavern I think this was set in the Civil War Era to not only make the romance between Elle and Malcolm seem potentially in jeopardy, but to also give the reader the ability to identify BlackJoy in even the most challenging times. #WritingAboutTexts
