Some of you designers need to hear this.

You shouldn’t be trying to charge just as much for design work as more experienced designers.

Humble yourself and charge less and put in the time.

We start charging more when we want to do less. If you’re new, you still want to do more, not less. You still need projects to grow and gain the experience needed to charge more.

For some—it’s a year. Some a couple years. And some of you that aren’t natural talent, it may take 5-10 years. That’s ok.

Just remember at first your goal is to grow and become wanted. If you’re over charging and not doing a lot of work you will not become a wanted designer because you won’t be getting hired—which means you’re not getting work—which means you’re not growing.

Just because I charge $10K a week doesn’t mean you should. Just because I can charge $50K for a one page marketing site doesn’t mean you should. News flash—I can’t even do that every time. I’ll still do them for $2K if I want to for the right client. Even do some for free still sometimes because I want to.

You should charge your current value + experience + needs and for some you that doesn’t = 5 figures and that is perfectly ok.

Once you figure that out, you just might start getting hired more. Every project is different. Every client is different. Every budget is different.

Stay humble and learn to grow over time.
