There’s basically two stories about the World Cup right now, it’s either
“US Customs hooks Tajik team up to the BallGrabber 7000 as they exit bus”
or
“59 year old man in Bentonville excitedly invites entire Congolese team to have breakfast with him at Waffle House”
this week has been awesome, can you imagine how fun it'd be if all of these were bundled together in some sort of electronic entertainment expo lol thatd be cute i think
Growing up in the South, I remember I’d read a book or watch TV and people would refer to “a forest” whereas we’d just call it “the woods.”
“A forest” refers to a singular, contained thing. “The woods” was everywhere, all encompassing. There is no definitive boundary to “the woods.”
This made me realize that its an american-ism to think of the attending crowd as against the visiting team. Happy Valley isnt legendary because theres an equal number of opponent fans, its legendary because every one of those fans is there to fuck with the players on the field.
If I’m an 18 year old student who grew up in America and knew nothing better, I’d love this.
However, this is a sporting event, not a concert. Why is the entire stadium singing? Where are the opposition fans?
There is 0 hostility there and thus it doesn’t feel like a real atmosphere and cannot be compared to European atmospheres 💁♀️
The Texas Longhorns have been playing football for 133 years. Their stadium opened 102 years ago. Today it would be the largest stadium in Europe. It’s named in honor of those who died in WWI
I think I've said this before but the closest you can get to adapting House of Leaves is to make it so Zampano is a wendigoon type YouTuber who's videos are re-uploaded by Johnny, who adds himself in randomly to talk about the reupload process
Oscar segment where Conan gets chased through the Backrooms by a tall, nightmarish figure only to see that his Still Life doppelganger is the exact same height and build etc.
I know it’s become pretty cliche and cringey to talk about at this point but if you’re under like 25 I cannot stress enough how one time Obama wore a tan suit and people spent a week arguing over whether or not it was demeaning to the Oval Office and they were serious about it.
This is exactly what "trust the science" looks like. Scientists updated the worst-case scenario because real-world emissions are tracking below RCP8.5's 2010-era assumptions of runaway coal expansion, primarily because wind and solar got cheap and climate policy started bending the curve. The new CMIP7 HIGH scenario published in Geoscientific Model Development still projects roughly 3°C of warming by 2100, twice the Paris target and a temperature Earth has not seen in roughly 3 million years.
The position being celebrated here amounts to: the climate policies worked well enough to retire the worst-case scenario, therefore we should kill the climate policies. That is hearing the smoke alarm shut off and concluding the fire department was a hoax.
What rules about Knight's Tale is that it may not be accurate, but it's clearly made by people who gave a shit.
Details like Count Ademar making fun of William's old armor, and going through the effort of giving him an ecranche (jousting shield) where everybody else just has integrated grand guards.
Authenticity and attention to detail is all I ask.
I think if you are invited to an ostensibly serious political podcast called "Bad Faith" you are reasonable to assume that the name is a joke and that the interviewer would actually maintain some kind of vigilance so as to avoid the very obvious joke when they behave poorly.
Every now and then I remember Tim Walz’s “they’re weird” campaign and how close the dems were to actually shifting the way people perceive the right in a very real way and then they just…stopped
