Wayne Broadhurst went out to walk his dog on an ordinary street in Uxbridge, and he did not come home. Dawood Safi, a man he had never met and never wronged, stabbed him to death where he stood - the neck, the chest, the side - and turned the knife that same day on two more people, a landlord and a boy of fourteen.

Safi is an Afghan national. He reached Britain by lorry in 2020, and in 2022 this country granted him asylum - which is to say we heard his case, accepted his account, and took him formally into our protection, on the old understanding that a nation which shelters a stranger does it to keep him from harm, and to keep harm from itself. The man Britain took in under that promise then killed one of the people it was meant to protect.

This week, at Southwark Crown Court, the charge for what he did to Wayne Broadhurst was moved from murder to manslaughter. The prosecution accepted a plea of diminished responsibility on the evidence of four psychiatrists that Safi was in a psychotic state when he killed, that he had, in the phrase, lost contact with reality. He denies the attempted murder of the two he attacked afterwards and will be tried for it. He has not been sentenced. None of this is finished.

The medical question I leave to the doctors; four of them agree, and the law has held for centuries that a man severed from reality does not kill with a murderer's mind. But take the psychiatry out and a plainer fact stands behind it, one no expert was asked to weigh: Wayne Broadhurst is dead because the British state took a man into its keeping and that man killed him. That was not a medical event. It was the downstream cost of a decision - to grant the asylum, and then, across a whole system, never to look at the grant again.

An asylum system is a promise a country makes, and every promise has two sides. We hear without end about the side owed to the claimant. The side owed to the public - that the people already here, who asked for none of this, will be kept safe from what is admitted in their name - has been treated for twenty years as something faintly shameful, a concern decent people are meant not to raise. Wayne Broadhurst was on the wrong side of that silence. So was the boy of fourteen.

A country that meant to go on surviving would grant asylum with extreme sparing, watch closely what it had granted, and make the safety of its own people the first charge on the whole arrangement, before any other claim upon it. Britain does none of these things, and a man out walking his dog has paid for the omission with his life. That will not be set right by grief, and it will not be set right in a comment thread - only by people willing to take the power to change it and then use it. The Labour government is now bringing in midnight social media curfews for 16 and 17-year-olds because they can’t be trusted to go online late at night.

You can’t have it both ways. Either they’re adults or they’re not.

The same government that struggles to control knife crime, grooming gangs, and open borders now wants to decide when teenagers can go online.

This isn’t about protecting kids it’s about control. Parents are perfectly capable of managing their own children without the state stepping in as the ultimate nanny.

Foreign Man Attempts To Snatch Child Outside Co-Op Supermarket In Bolton.

A foreign man attempted to abduct a child outside the Co-op store on Wigan Road in Bolton yesterday.

The suspect approached the child in what police say was a clear attempt to abduct them. A member of the public quickly intervened, tackling him and holding him until police arrived and made an arrest.

The child was thankfully unharmed and supported by authorities.

Police have confirmed the man was already on their radar for similar concerns earlier that day.

Chief Inspector Chris Boyd thanked the public for their help and said officers have increased patrols in the area to reassure the community.

The Wigan Road and surrounding neighbourhoods in Bolton have seen rising numbers of HMOs and shared housing in recent years, part of wider pressures in the Greater Manchester region where some properties are used for asylum seeker dispersal accommodation.

These changes have sparked ongoing local debates about community impact and resources.

Families in Bolton are being urged to keep children close, especially in busy areas, and report anything suspicious immediately.

A man is complaining that Wetherspoons told him he couldn’t use the women’s toilets after two women informed staff they were uncomfortable with him being in there.

Apparently, women are expected to be perfectly comfortable with a man being in, and taking photos in, the ladies’ toilets.

Not a word about the women who no longer felt safe or comfortable because he was there. Plenty, though, about his own “safety” and “comfort” if he had to use the men’s.

🚨NEW: Algerian migrant who was caught trying to rape a woman near Buckingham Palace was released on bail by the police and left to roam the streets for over a year.

Ramzi Barkat, 54, tailed the lone woman out of St James’s Park in the early hours of September 7 2024.

After his attempts to flirt with her were rejected, he tackled her to ground, grabbed her wrists and “straddled” her, His Honour Judge Justin Cole said.

The judge said that Barkat, who was born in Algeria, “sought to take advantage of a lone vulnerable woman” and “acted like a predator”.

Three passing soldiers stopped the attempted attack when they heard the woman’s screams. Barkat assaulted one of the soldiers.

Barkat was eventually sentenced to seven years and three months on Friday. The judge said that the police investigating the matter had shown a "catalogue of incompetencies."

He told the court that after the complainant was interviewed, Barkat was released either on bail or under investigation.

"He was simply let go in a situation in which frankly he had been caught red-handed and presented a continuing danger to the public."

He added: "The bottom line is this man was set free for period of a year, a year to do what he likes, in a situation where he had attacked a lone female in a park."

18-Year-Old Stabbed To Death In Milton Keynes, Two Men With Foreign Names Charged With Murder.

Around 4:20pm on Sunday 5 July 2026, emergency services were dispatched to the Eelbrook Avenue area of Bradwell Common after reports of a violent altercation near the playground.

Fariss Kapaga-Fakeer, 18, was found bleeding from multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to hospital but, despite paramedics best efforts, he tragically died from his injuries.

On Wednesday 8 July, Salim Moludi, 19, of Colne in Tinkers Bridge, was charged with murder. He appeared at Milton Keynes Magistrates' Court on Thursday and the case has been forwarded to Aylesbury Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

On Friday 10 July, Jasiah Highton, 26, of Burholme, Milton Keynes, was also charged with one count of murder. He was due to appear at Milton Keynes Magistrates Court yesterday.

A 31-year-old woman from Milton Keynes has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains under investigation. No further public details have been released yet, except that both men have been remanded in custody as the case progresses.

Detective Inspector Amy Fox: "Our condolences, thoughts and support are with the family of Fariss Kapaga-Fakeer at this unimaginably traumatic time."

Detectives are appealing for information.

Anyone who was in the Eelbrook Avenue area of Bradwell Common, particularly near the playground, between 3:30pm and 4:30pm on Sunday 5 July and witnessed the altercation is urged to come forward by contacting Thames Valley Police on 101, quoting reference 43260341242.
