The public comment window closed back in 2024, before data centers became a national concern. One resident who wanted to raise water concerns in a drought-prone region was told she was too late.
The mayor pointed to the tax revenue, construction jobs, a million-dollar fire truck donation, nonprofit grants, and Amazon's sponsorship of the town's Garlic Festival.

My Take
Corporations do not give away fire trucks out of kindness. Amazon pushed a $100 billion water-hungry project through a 45-year-old comment process that closed in 2024, which locked residents out of the one decision that touches their drought-stricken water supply. The Garlic Festival sponsorship and the fire truck buy quiet acceptance of a project the residents never got to weigh in on.

Amazon promises a wastewater recovery system and a pipeline but will not say who pays to build and run it for the next 30 years. Gilroy just signed up for a permanent industrial water customer in a region that fights over every drop, and got construction jobs and a fire truck for it. If the AI bubble deflates and this place runs half empty, the town still carries the water commitment and the infrastructure costs while Amazon keeps the rights it locked in. The residents asked to be included and were told the decision had already been made two years earlier.

Nous ne disposons pas encore du bilan définitif de 2026. Mais au vu de l’accumulation et de l’ampleur des événements depuis le début de l’année, la question peut désormais sérieusement se poser.

À titre de comparaison, le gel historique d’avril 2021 avait provoqué près de 2 milliards d’euros de pertes agricoles, tandis que la sécheresse et les canicules de 2022 avaient engendré environ 1,15 milliard d’euros de pertes de production agricole.

Les pertes agricoles pour les cultures implantées au printemps sont drastiques. Fort heureusement, elles restent globalement plus mesurées pour les cultures d’hiver, qui ont en partie échappé au cœur de la sécheresse et des canicules estivales.
