My wife and I talk about this all the time. I think the same, and it's probably because back in the day the game you got was the final, polished version. Nowadays it feels like companies are putting out really advanced betas (when we're lucky, sometimes they push things that just seem unfinished) because they rely on the convenience of being able to push patches.

Also, we as consumers (as a whole) have unfortunately contributed to the downfall in quality because we keep purchasing half baked games which lets the companies known "yeah, this game is a mess but I'll still pay the $80"
