Advice for those entering the first year econ PhD:
1. You often won't know the answer to a question. Practice writing plausible-but-maybe-wrong answers.
2. If you are completely lost on a pset or concept, take a break then return. It helps.
3. Type up condensed lecture notes.
@MeganTStevenson Advice is free-disposal. As long as the refs aren't overly derogatory I think this feedback could be quite helpful. Of course maybe other ways of communicating said feedback might be better, I think it's okay to do it in a ref report.
Re- all the talk about math talent and first year econ coursework:
The first year classes did truly make me feel like I could do this PhD thing. If I can grind a 4 15-page math psets every two weeks I can understand most applied labor models with enough time/effort.
@alz_zyd_ Some also just think more systematically than others, irrespective of prefs for grinding math psets. Systematic thinkers will get 100% IF they can grind foundations, but 30% if not. Nonsystematic thinkers never grind the basics and still get ~70% on exams, never much higher.
@cblatts Another important consideration is that I doubt schools (*departments) are revenue-maximizing. They're prestige-maxing, which may mostly be determined by the prestigue of the best-placed student.
@heeney_luke I've wondered how rich vs poor graduate students select into academic fields. Anecdotally, I know more rich students in the arts than the sciences (worse outside options = more need for external financial security).
@EmilVerner This looks like useful variation. I bet one could write a nice historical crime paper on the effects of bank runs on homicide / mortality / etc.
This is such good reporting from the @harvardcrimeson:
There are about 27,000 high schools in the U.S.
Over the past 15 years, 1 in 11 students at Harvard have come from just 21 high schools.
So 9.1% of Harvard students come from 0.07% of US schools. @nytdavidbrooks

@MarketPowerYT@remarkablepaper My remarkable got me through first-year of my econ PhD! My main gripe has been the grayscale/no color, but this upgrade would make it perfect for my needs.
