Acabo de publicar el reporte más completo que existe sobre la minería de Bitcoin en Paraguay.

¡Lo que encontramos tiene implicaciones directas para Venezuela!

Esta es la historia de dos países con la misma energía, dos destinos completamente distintos, y por qué eso podría estar a punto de cambiar. 🇵🇾🇻🇪⚡₿

Paraguay tiene tres represas. Itaipu en el río Paraná, con 14.000 MW de capacidad total. La mitad le corresponde a Paraguay por tratado: 7.000 MW que solos cubren el 86% de toda la demanda eléctrica nacional de un país de 7 millones de personas. Yacyretá, compartida con Argentina, añade 1.600 MW más. Acaray, 100% nacional, otros 210 MW.

Resultado: un excedente estructural de energía hidroeléctrica que no tiene a dónde ir. Eso, y solo eso, convirtió a Paraguay en el cuarto país del mundo con más actividad de minería de Bitcoin, detrás de Estados Unidos, Rusia y China. Hoy el país tiene aproximadamente el 4,3% del hashrate global, unos 43 EH/s al Q2 2026.

Venezuela tiene el Complejo del Bajo Caroní. Guri, Macagua, Caruachi. Capacidad instalada de aproximadamente 16 GW. La demanda nacional pico de Venezuela fue históricamente de 17 GW. Hay 7.500 MW atrapados que la línea de transmisión de 765 kV no puede despachar al norte del país desde que las plantas industriales de aluminio y acero de CVG en Puerto Ordaz, que los consumían localmente, fueron destruidas.

Ese excedente venezolano es estructuralmente idéntico al excedente paraguayo que creó toda una industria. La diferencia: Paraguay construyó la infraestructura para monetizarlo. Venezuela no. Todavía.

Eso es lo que más me importa del reporte que publicamos. Pero primero, el estado actual de Paraguay, porque los venezolanos necesitan entenderlo antes de comparar.

La era del arbitraje fácil en Paraguay terminó. La tarifa que hace cinco años era $0,03/kWh está hoy en $0,051/kWh y empujando hacia $0,06/kWh. Hay un factor de pérdida de red del 8% en la subestación porque la red paraguaya es mayormente aérea, no subterránea, en un país que regularmente alcanza los 40°C.

Y la empresa estatal de electricidad, ANDE, ahora exige un depósito de garantía equivalente a tres meses de costos de energía antes de iniciar operaciones. Para un operador de 40 MW eso son unos $4,5 millones inmovilizados antes de minar un solo bloque.

El mercado se bifurcó en dos mundos que ya no se comunican: los que construyeron infraestructura de alta tensión y refrigeración líquida a escala industrial, y los que trataron esto como arbitraje temporal. Los segundos ya se fueron.

Tres operadores definen cómo quedó el mercado.

@AlpsBlockchain, el pionero europeo, invirtió unos 40 millones de euros para llegar a 40 MW en diez sitios distribuidos. Pero los aumentos tarifarios continuos, los depósitos de garantía retroactivos y el vencimiento de contratos el 31 de diciembre de 2027 introdujeron un nivel de riesgo soberano que el capital institucional no puede sostener indefinidamente.

Alps está redirigiendo su experiencia operativa hacia Bolivia y posicionándose como primer entrante en mercados emergentes con energía abundante. Venezuela podría estar en su mira si el mercado se abre y mejoran las garantías jurídicas.

@somospenguin representa la tesis opuesta: integración local profunda como ventaja competitiva imposible de replicar rápidamente. Penguin empezó en Paraguay en 2019 con Penguin Academy, construyendo relaciones antes de desplegar una sola máquina.

Firmaron el primer PPA de 100 MW de Paraguay y construyeron la primera subestación privada de alta tensión del país en colaboración directa con ANDE. Para 2022 tenían mayoría de accionistas, directivos y empleados paraguayos. Su último data center corre a 200 kW por rack con refrigeración líquida directa al chip: la densidad de un deployment moderno de GPUs de Nvidia. No están pivotando hacia IA. Ya están ahí.

@HIVEDigitalTech es el gigante. El mayor minero de Bitcoin en América Latina y uno de los socios más cercanos de Luxor en el mundo. Opera dos sitios en Paraguay: Yguazú con 240 MW y 12,15 EH/s, y Valenzuela con 160 MW y 6,72 EH/s. Total: 400 MW instalados y 18,87 EH/s. La expansión Fase 3 en Yguazú está actualmente en construcción. 18,87 EH/s desde un solo país es uno de los mayores aportes nacionales de hashrate global fuera de Estados Unidos.

La fecha que define todo el mercado paraguayo es el 31 de diciembre de 2027: el vencimiento de los contratos ANDE. Los operadores que construyeron subestaciones de alta tensión, formaron equipos locales y demostraron flexibilidad de curtailment son los que tienen la mejor posición en esas negociaciones. Los que llegaron a hacer arbitraje ya se fueron.

Ahora lo que más me importa.

Venezuela tiene más del doble del excedente energético de Paraguay. El Bajo Caroní tiene 16 GW instalados contra 7.000 MW de la cuota paraguaya de Itaipu. La Faja del Orinoco, la cuenca del Maracaibo y los campos de Monagas y Anzoátegui queman gas equivalente a unos 344.000 barriles diarios.

El mismo modelo modular de gas-to-power que Crusoe Energy opera en las cuencas de esquisto americanas, y que @UnblockComputos, @tomasoc y su equipo lleno de venezolanos, están ejecutando en Vaca Muerta en Argentina, aplica aquí a una escala sin paralelo en el hemisferio. Hablé con Tomás en Las Vegas y estaría dispuestos a visitar los campos en Venezuela junto a @VaKaNoBTC y El Sultán.

Lo que ha mantenido a Venezuela fuera del mercado no es su energía. Es la barrera política y regulatoria que ha hecho imposible la entrada del capital privado, especialmente del capital americano. Esa barrera no es tan absoluta como era.

Las Licencias Generales OFAC 48A y 49A ya fueron emitidas, autorizando a empresas americanas a operar en el sector energético venezolano. Arc Energy, el fondo americano que adquirió IMPSA, está activamente haciendo lobby para obtener licencias para rehabilitar Tocoma, un proyecto hidroeléctrico de 2.160 MW en el Caroní que costó unos $8.900 millones y nunca fue terminado. Su proyección: 500 MW operativos a los 18 meses de obtener la licencia, 2.500 MW en cinco años. La minería de Bitcoin usa la misma estructura legal.

Para los operadores que hoy están siendo presionados por las tarifas crecientes de Paraguay y la incertidumbre del 2027, ese calendario vale la pena seguirlo. Si la rehabilitación de Tocoma comienza, la economía temprana de un despliegue venezolano empieza a parecerse a los primeros días de Paraguay: energía hidroeléctrica varada a costo marginal casi cero, competencia mínima por los megavatios disponibles, y un gobierno que necesita los ingresos en dólares que genera la minería.

Ingenieros eléctricos venezolanos con décadas de experiencia en el sistema, los mismos que construyeron la red en los años 70, 80 y 90, confirman la viabilidad técnica. El mecanismo es directo: instalar entre 20 y 40 centros de minado co-localizados en el Bajo Caroní, conectarlos al Centro de Despacho de Carga de Puerto Ordaz, y operarlos como carga flexible exactamente como Penguin y HIVE operan su curtailment con ANDE hoy.

Cuando hay exceso de generación hidroeléctrica se encienden. Cuando la demanda nacional sube se apagan en minutos. El agua que antes se botaba al embalse se convierte en hashrate.

Paraguay no tuvo que competir con Venezuela para convertirse en el cuarto país con más hashrate del mundo. Es posible que no siempre tenga esa ventaja.

La minería de Bitcoin volverá a Venezuela.

My hope for this project is that in the process, we can make it maximally easy and one-click to do distributed staking for institutions. Choose which computers run your nodes, make a config file where they all have the same key, and then from there everything gets set up automatically.

The idea that "running infrastructure" is this scary complicated thing where each person participating must be a "professional" is awful and anti-decentralization, and we must attack it directly.

It should be a docker container or nix image or similar, one click or command line per node, enter the same key in each node, and they automatically find each other, the networking is set up, the DKG happens, and the staking begins.

I also plan to use this soon, and I hope more institutions holding ETH can stake in this way. We want the authority over staking nodes to be highly distributed, and the first step to doing this is to make it easy.
