.@Europarl_EN approved the directive obliging firms to mitigate their impact on #humanrights & the environment.
But what influences the effectiveness of such laws?

🚨BREAKING: campaigners have built a message made with larger-than-life children’s building blocks outside @educationgovuk.
We’ve spelt out the message, because clearly the government isn’t listening.

Are there more survivors of modern slavery in the UK prisons than there are perpetrators? Possibly.
We (i.e. @SlaveryPEC) published a report looking into that, the lack of protection, identification and support for survivors, and I did a little video about it 👇.
We like to think that the Government deals with the problem by identifying and protecting survivors, whilst working to send perpetrators to prisons. Well, the reality is much more complicated.
Today we published a new report shedding light on this issue, carried out by the @Uni_of_Essex in partnership with @IOM_UK and @hibiscuscharity.
It found that there are many modern slavery survivors imprisoned across the UK, many of them convicted for crimes they committed as a result of modern slavery, and that the scale of this issue is likely larger than currently known.
The research analysed the challenges with identification of survivors in prisons and with the lack of support for them.
The research was funded by @SlaveryPEC, which in turn is funded and supported by @ahrcpress.

Szacun
As @Anti_Slavery ‘s former UN representative & intl advocacy lead (for over a decade), I keep re-reading this in a kind of stunned ‘this is the U.K… my country’ that has fallen SO far. Brutal day. We have to be better than this.
People seeking safety welcome - today & always
1/ I was asked yesterday by someone to give examples of men who represented healthy masculinity and I thought, "well, it's men who don't think that being a man ultimately involves dominance over everyone in your surroundings".
On the #WorldRefugeeDay we celebrate brave people who leave their lives behind, go into the unknown & build their lives from scratch.
It's also a reminder of how protections for them are being eroded. Here, @VictoriaTecca talks about it in connection to #IllegalMigrationBill
On the World Refugee Day, our Policy Impact Manager @VictoriaTecca talks about people seeking refuge needing protection, including from modern slavery, in the context of the Illegal Migration Bill.
"It denies them protection from traffickers, it denies them the opportunity to come forward and be identified, and work with authorities to prosecute their traffickers".
@jaksobik was interviewed by @UCBMedia on the impact of the Illegal Migration Bill.

When I started at @SlaveryPEC three years ago there was nothing in place, pretty literally. We've come a long way since, and our first ever Impact Report puts it in perspective. Still, a long way to go, but looking forward to working with so many people and us improving further.
We've published our first ever Impact Report, setting out what we've done and achieved since the Modern Slavery PEC was set up in 2019, including:
💥 impact on policy, laws and practice,
🔎 research,
🤝building partnerships
👥survivor inclusion.

A short video on our Explainer on the Illegal Migration Bill’s modern slavery clauses as the Bill is heading to the Lords.
In short, the Bill would deny protection from trafficking to potentially thousands of people 👇
The debate on the Illegal Migration Bill is heading to the House of Lords, so we're publishing an updated Explainer on its modern slavery clauses & a brief fact sheet.
Here's our Communications Director @jaksobik explaining what our analysis found.

"The movement would benefit from having more people with lived experience involved. We need to think about what that means programmatically. We need to involve people not as beneficiaries, but as people who have the ability to make decisions." @sophieotiende, Chief Executive Officer, Global Fund to End Modern Slavery @_GFEMS / #CTHB23 watch live https://t.co/8cCh3FqIG9 #HumanTrafficking

If enacted, the Bill would deny protection to potentially thousands of vulnerable people who have been trafficked and exploited...
Our take on the Illegal Migration Bill, based on evidence.
PUBLISHED: Explainer on the Illegal Migration Bill:
1⃣It could deny protection to thousands of #modernslavery survivors
2⃣Claims of ‘abuse’ of the modern slavery support system not backed up by evidence
3⃣Bill is not compatible with UK's legal obligations
