The artist who painted this had killed a man and was hiding from a death sentence. He hid a secret into this painting, a message meant for the only person on earth who could save him...

This is David with the Head of Goliath by Caravaggio, made around 1610. A young David holds up the severed head of the giant he has just slain. But David is not triumphant. Look at his face. There is no victory in it, only sorrow and a strange pity, as if he takes no pleasure in what he has done.

And then you notice the deatil that changes everything: the severed head is a self-portrait. Caravaggio painted his own face onto the head of the slain giant...

In 1606 Caravaggio killed a man named Ranuccio Tomassoni in a brawl in Rome, and from that day he was a fugitive with a death sentence on his head, drifting from city to city, hunted, and unable to go home.

He painted this in the last year of his life, on the run, and he did something almost no artist has ever dared. He cast himself not as the hero, but as the villain, the guilty one, the monster who deserved to die.

But it is more than an admission of guilt: it's a plea. Caravaggio sent this painting to Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the most powerful art patron in Rome and the nephew of Pope Paul V, the one man who could secure him a pardon and bring him home.

On David’s sword is an inscription that reads H-AS OS, Humilitas occidit superbiam, "humility kills pride." He was saying: I know what I have become, I offer you my own severed head, take the worst of me and let the rest of me live. Let me come home and be forgiven.

The pardon was granted, but it came too late. Caravaggio died in the summer of 1610, at just thirty-eight, before the news of his forgiveness could reach him. When word of his death spread through the literary world, Giambattista Marino, one of the most celebrated poets of the era, beautifully put into words the sense of loss and awe that Caravaggio had inspired:

"Death and Nature made a cruel plot against you, Caravaggio: Nature feared being surpassed by every image you created. Death burned with indignation because those cut down by his scythe you returned to life, with interest."
