@MartinSLewis @Gingerbread I got stung by this in 2016/17 and had to pay 4 years arrears of £9K + interest in a year, when I rang HMRC they refused to extend the term and suggested I put it on a credit card.

Fair to say that made me so angry!

The year was a write off, £750 a month was crippling.

@WallStreetSilv The issue is that it should be properly funded and should have:

a) An adequate grace period to allow you to purchase a vehicle which is compliant. Not just EV, plenty of newer petrol cars are fine.

b) Scrappage scheme which is supportive of residents. Car = £2K is not enough.
