Born on this day in 1833 was Confederate Lt. Gen. Stephen D. Lee.

Lee was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from West Point in 1854 and served in the U.S. Army artillery on the frontier until he resigned in 1861.

He started the war on Beauregard’s staff, then commanded artillery. He fought at Seven Days, Seven Pines, Second Manassas and Antietam. He was later sent west and then captured at Vicksburg.

After his exchange he rose fast. He commanded cavalry, then infantry, in Mississippi and Alabama. In 1864 he became the youngest lieutenant general in the Confederate army at age 30. He fought through the Atlanta campaign and at Franklin and Nashville.

After the war, Lee settled in Columbus, Mississippi, served in the state senate, and became the first president of Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College, now Mississippi State. He later headed the United Confederate Veterans. He died in 1908.
