@DracoReformans I don't know the history as well as these two, young Calvin scholars do. So I'm genuinely interested to learn more, and see how Calvin can be applied to the question.
The second half of Deuteronomy 18 is a warning against "enchantment", not because there is no power in those practices, but because there is and it is not of God. The Protestant Reformers - and their true progeny - far from attempting to drain our religion of power (and secondarily, 'enchantment') - simply wanted the power to be sought where God promises to mediate it.
@WASPmexicano What if I told you enchantment is bad?
Protestants freed piety from "spirituality"
All religions have "enchantment" and "spirituality"
Only Christianity has true devotion to God
The mainlines just collectively stopped evangelizing
For generations they were able to count on maintaining numbers by reproduction
So once the cultural duty to remain in your parents church vanished, so did they
Make Mainline Protestants evangelize again!
@PerfInjust Too many evangelical influencers imagine themselves heroically fighting great battles of the past—presumably some combination of Machen’s and the civil rights movement.
