Kenyans are fuming after their Members of Parliament slyly exempted themselves from paying KES 1 billion in car taxes through a covert amendment to the Tax Amendment Bill, which was signed into law by the President yesterday.

Initially, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) had sought KES 2.5 million in taxes from each MP for their luxury vehicles. However, in a move that has sparked nationwide anger, the MPs used their legislative power to offload this financial responsibility onto the already struggling taxpayers.

For ordinary Kenyans, already burdened by skyrocketing taxes and a declining economy, this latest betrayal feels like salt in a festering wound. “We pay taxes on basic necessities, and they can’t even pay for their luxury cars? Enough is enough!” lamented one Nairobi resident.
