How the hell does the UK actually pay for a National Care Service without bankrupting itself or shafting workers/pensioners?
Levy? Raid the triple lock? Cap people’s costs? Or just keep kicking the can?
Genuine ideas only.

[James Morris @JamesMorris3107]

What if National Care Service hits?
Private homes = ~85% of UK older care places.
Limiting public cash to for-profits: • Fewer council contracts • End self-pay subsidy • Closures (esp PE chains)
Capacity drops, demand rises. Quality↑? Residents disrupted.
Fine print decides.

🌊⚡ New public Grid body + path to public water control announced.
Aims: faster renewables connections, cleaner waterways, less pollution, stronger oversight & lower long-term costs for Britain’s utilities.
Could this give more control at better prices? 🇬🇧♻️

915k adults in England now get homecare/supported living across ~18k services.
Supported living & micro-providers rising.
LAs pushing community care.
Overseas recruitment cut = pressure.
Care homes for sale at 6-year low → prices up.

🇬🇧 6 million people in the UK can’t afford enough food…
yet we bin 6 million tonnes of it from our homes every year.
That’s £17 billion of good food wasted while food banks are overrun.
Food waste = hunger problem.
Stop wasting. Start sharing.
#FoodWaste #FoodPoverty #UKHunger

[UN Environment Programme @UNEP]

Nearly 1 in 5 portions of food available to consumers goes to waste.

That means the land, water, energy and labour used to produce it are wasted too.

This #FLWDay and every day, it’s time to #StopFoodLossWaste and make better use of our planet’s resources.

Councils are being squeezed from both sides.
NHS is shifting care costs onto them.
Providers face higher staff costs but aren’t being paid enough.
Homecare rates still too low.
More pressure. More waiting.
Broken system.

We need to find a solution to social care

“Nothing is off the table”

Prime Minister Andy Burnham says he will look at all the options for how to pay for his proposal for universal social care but that the system will be one where “everyone contributes”

96,000 care vacancies.
Yet many overseas care workers are jobless.
Their employers lost the licence to sponsor them.
They came to help. Now they’re stuck.
Broken system.

🚨 CQC’s new assessment framework is coming soon
The Single Assessment Framework is out.
Sector-specific frameworks are in.
5 key questions stay.
Quality statements → Key Lines of Enquiry
Clearer ratings. Real change.
Providers, are you ready?

Opening a bedroom door at night often wakes residents.
1M+ nights of data show:
• Irregular sleep = 1.5x fall risk
• Visibility → +1hr sleep + 8% efficiency
• Digital checks = fewer interruptions

What can more than one million resident-nights of sleep data tell us about care home residents?

This report highlights how changes in sleep patterns could provide an early signal for care teams.

🇳🇴 Petrol cars are basically extinct in Norway.
98.7% of new cars sold in August were electric.
The country’s new-car market is now almost fully EV.
Is 100% renewable next?

[World of Statistics @stats_feed]

🇳🇴 Norway’s EV transition is nearly complete.

In August, electric cars made up a record 98.7% of new passenger car registrations. For 2026 so far, EVs account for 97.8% of new cars sold, up from 94.5% in the same period last year.

Only a few dozen petrol and diesel cars were registered in the entire country last month. The new-car market is now effectively all-electric.

Why isn’t the CQC more prescriptive?
They set the standards but leave loads of flexibility on how providers meet them. Is this the best way to keep people safe, or does it just create inconsistency?
Curious what others think.

UK councils are rolling out AI to help social workers cut paperwork and manage demand.
Tech is also helping more people stay independent longer.

Thank you to everyone at Care UK’s Garth House Nursing Home in Dorking. The care and dignity you gave my grandad, especially at the end of his life, meant so much to my family. You did him proud.

[James Morris @JamesMorris3107]

We need more affordable care homes that are big enough to run efficiently, yet still provide safe, decent care and dignity.
Quality care shouldn’t only be for those who can stretch the furthest.
Just something I’ve been thinking about.

UK Gov finally moving on a new Dementia Tsar.
Recommended by Baroness Casey to drive better diagnosis, care & research.
1 million people affected — about time.
Who should get the job?

Alzheimer’s Society wants an 18-week dementia target — same as cancer.
No national target = long waits.
They say it forces earlier diagnosis and unlocks support for families.
1 million have it. Heading for 1.4 million.
