By far the dumbest argument you will see out there is the people saying that publicly executing Hasan will ‘create’ people who hate America. Just shows a complete ignorance for Middle Eastern cultures and every lesson of the War on Terror era
Public executions were a thing basically across all history up until between 80-150 years ago. Including in countries and eras that I would describe as far more morally upright than 21st century America.
So what does “civilized” mean? I don’t think we are frankly more civilized than many recent eras of human history. We genocide our children in the womb in unprecedented numbers and using gruesome methods…but we call it “healthcare”. We perform genital mutilation on children, and we call it “gender therapy”. We allow the most vile, despicable, and evil displays of sexual depravity in human history to be accessed in the blink of an eye by anyone and we call it “freedom of speech”.
I think we just do a really good job of euphemisms and lying to ourselves. Death, in particular, is euphemized extensively. It also tracks with a general numbness to reality which most of Western humanity seems to be sleepwalking through right now. A detachment and total lack of understanding about the beauty and the brutality of life. A soft life where we still conduct all of our vile societal sins at a grand scale but do so in clean surgical rooms while we keep our head under the pillow and maintain our society’s plausible deniability.
I think there are actually good reasons to conduct public executions in today’s age. Do I think that Trump is doing it for any other reason than spectacle? Probably not. But I am parsing his intent from the act itself.
@MrMattBSN@milkywayspray A pride parade is a propaganda moment for these terrorists. They already want to kill us all, hence what Hasan did. The point of broadcasting it is for transparancy, and to show the world that America will no longer exercise restraint against its enemies, especially its traitors.
