Carlo Maria Viganò is the eighty-five-year-old Italian archbishop who used to be the Vatican’s ambassador to the United States.
He was a career diplomat — Nigeria, the Secretariat of State, then secretary-general of Vatican City — until Pope Francis iced him out. In 2018 he went public with a long letter accusing Francis of covering up the abuse by Cardinal McCarrick and demanded the pope resign. The Vatican rejected it.
From there he slid further right: rejecting Vatican II, calling Francis a “false prophet,” pushing COVID and “globalist” conspiracy stuff, and planning a traditionalist seminary outside Church control. In July 2024 the Vatican found him guilty of schism and excommunicated him. He still calls himself a faithful son of the Church and refuses to accept the sentence.
He’s still at it — just last week he published a book called The Capital Schism, arguing the pope himself can become the enemy of the papacy.
