People are treating data centers like a plague. I think that is a mistake.
A lot of the “go green” energy we already built has the same problem people now pin on data centers. We put up wind farms that never paid for themselves, then hauled the blades to landfills. We banned straws while much of the world still dumps trash in rivers and burns wood and waste for heat. That is not serious environmentalism. That is theater.
Data centers are different. They are a huge new customer for power. That sounds scary until you remember what our grids actually need: more generation, more investment, and more reason to build firm power instead of hoping the weather cooperates. A lot of these projects are not just plugging into a weak grid and hoping. They are bringing gas plants, and in some cases nuclear deals, because they cannot wait five years for a utility interconnection. That new capacity does not only serve the servers. It can make the local system stronger.
Water is the other scare line. Direct cooling water for U.S. data centers is real, and it should be managed in dry areas. It is also tiny next to farms, lawns, and golf courses. If water use is the test, we should apply it to every industry, not just the one that became politically fashionable this year.
Then there is money. In Loudoun County, Virginia, data centers take up a small slice of the land and produce a huge slice of the tax base. That revenue has funded schools, fire service, and roads while cutting homeowner property taxes. Analyses there put the homeowner savings in the thousands of dollars a year. That is not abstract. That is how a county pays for infrastructure without squeezing every household.
Yes, there are tradeoffs. Construction traffic. Noise. Ugly buildings. Local deals should be hard-nosed: they pay their way, they add power, they do not dump costs onto ratepayers, and they use recycled water where it makes sense. That is adult local government. Blanket “no data centers” is not.
What worries me is the politics under the panic. America has one of the few real advantages left in the AI race: we can still build at scale. Slow that down with fear and you do not get a greener, calmer country. You get weaker grids, weaker towns, and a gift to China. We already did this with nuclear. We spent 50 years being afraid of the thing that could have given us cheap, clean, reliable power. A lot of people are cheering for the same outcome again.
Data centers will not fix every problem. But regions that host them and negotiate well tend to get richer. Regions that scare them off tend to keep the potholes and the brownouts.
If we want better infrastructure, cheaper power over time, and a country that still builds things, this is one of the fights we should not lose because it felt good to be against something. I should know. I fell into the go-green cult over a decade ago and have felt foolish ever since.

It’s way safer than human drivers. I automatically feel safer with a Tesla driving near me. Until I realize they don’t have fsd. Then I treat them just like every other crappy human driver. Humans are horrible drivers period. 40,000 deaths a year I bet most are young and dumb or super old. Probably 5x the number of injuries 200,000 plus. I’m just guessing. @grok

I’ve only been investing hard in Tesla for 2 years. A lot of you have been in 5 years. The flywheel Tesla has been building is so ffing crazy the S curve is ludicrous they keep building like humanity depends ons it. They could’ve been money focused but they havnt. This company is the hold forever and build generational wealth stock in my opinion.
