one final goodbye, rene baterbonia. 🕊️
today, we bid you farewell. your name, your dreams, and your legacy will never be forgotten. you were gone too soon, with so much life and promise still ahead of you.
fly high. 💙
My love for the Ateneo Blue Eagles began 16 years ago. One day, I turned on the TV just in time to see Ryan Buenafe bury the dagger three against FEU Tamaraws in the Season 73 Finals. That moment started it all.
Over the past 16 years, being a fan has given me countless joyful memories, especially the championships and triumphs that made us proud. But along with those highs came moments of heartbreak.
When Ateneo fell short of a historic six-peat and missed the Final Four in Season 76, it hurt.
When they were defeated twice by NU Bulldogs in the Final Four in Season 77, that was painful.
When Mac Belo hit that heartbreaking buzzer-beater in the Final Four of Season 78, I cried.
When Ateneo lost in the Season 79 Finals, I was left wondering what could have been.
And who could ever forget JD Cagulangan’s buzzer-beating three in Season 84? It felt like my world had collapsed in that moment.
When the team failed to defend its title in Season 86, that hurt too.
But finishing in 8th place in Season 87 brought a different kind of pain.
Then came Season 88. We thought it would be a redemption year. The team got off to such a promising start, only for it to end in 6th place. That was heartbreaking.
Yet none of those losses compare to the pain of watching the team you love lose the very players who gave it hope.
Nothing hurts more than that.
It has gotten to the point where the championships I once celebrated feel distant, almost forgotten.
But I will not turn my back on the players. They, too, are victims of all that has happened. Perhaps the most heartbreaking part is seeing their teammates carry not only their grief, but also the blame of others.
Yesterday, Divine began his journey home. Tomorrow, Rene will be laid to rest.
We continue to pray that our voices are heard. May God hear the prayers of their families, their loved ones, their teammates, and everyone grieving this unimaginable loss.
Paalam, D. Paalam, Bobet.
💙
Having June 8 declared as Rene Clert Baterbonia Day in the Municipality of Talacogon is a testament to the lives you touched and the hearts you inspired.
though you may be gone, your legacy will continue to inspire others, and you will forever be remembered, bobet! ❤️🩹
serves those sending threats and spreading misinformation right. and those hiding behind dummy accounts are only loud bc they think they’re beyond reach. too bad consequences do exist

let’s admit it. kieffer alas is clearly a standout player even without his last name. people refuse to accept it bc they’re too invested in the narrative they’ve alr created and only want to believe what fits their assumptions. give credit where’s it’s due. the kid has earned it
hope they’ll take this time to heal from all the trauma and grief they’ve been carrying and come back stronger with lighter hearts
we’ll be right here waiting for you from the sidelines, bebob. you will always have us 💙🤍
even if it doesn't sit well with us, i don't think it's our place to question a grieving mother. especially someone na pinagkakaitan pa din ng katotohanan at hustisya para sa anak niya.
"Hold accountable those responsible, impose sanctions if there are violations, but don’t ever punish the student-athletes just to satisfy a sense of revenge or misplaced equality.
Let’s not add to the trauma by making the [Ateneo] Blue Eagles sit out."

I keep thinking about the moment Divine said goodbye to his family before leaving Nigeria. None of them could have imagined that their next reunion would be this way. He left with dreams and determination, only to be taken far too soon. It's truly devastating. 💔
mas mahirap ‘tong paparating na week na ‘to. kasi wala na si divine sa pinas at ililibing na si rene. mararamdaman lalo natin lahat ng sakit, panghihinayang, panlulumbay, at galit.
just imagine what uaap s89 would have been for divine 🥺 he had just came back from an injury and looking so healthy and ready for the upcoming season damnnn there was so much to look forward to
may God continue to guide bobet's family, especially his siblings, for them to continue the dreams rene had in hopes of making their lives better.
he was truly a man for others. you lived a life of purpose & legacy, rene. 🕊
