It is time to say goodbye. At the peak our TypeScript monorepo was ~2.5 million lines of code (excluding comments, node_modules, etc.). This is not a post hating on TypeScript though.
Motion would likely not have survived until today without it. We have pivoted 20x times .
When we were at $15M ARR, Michael Seibel told us we were f*cked. No path to $1B ARR. We weren't delivering enough value to customers. Motion was just a “very nice to have.” Here’s what we did about it.
When Chander joined Motion 3.5 years ago to lead engineering, we both thought he'd quit by now - he'd always wanted to start his own startup.
But today, Motion is his own startup, as a co-founder.
This was not a light decision - the bar we have for any team member is insanely high, let alone a co-founder.
The decision was made for one reason only: increase in Motion's probability of winning. And that delta is just as high for Chander, as for Ethan, Omid, and myself.
Chander has the highest pain tolerance out of any human I've ever met.
Yes - sometimes, that's not a good thing: he always wants to fly Spirit economy and gets f*ked with delayed flights. His pick of 2-star hotels for offsites is always veto'ed by me.
But sometimes, the willingness to suffer more pain than our competitors is our moat.
We are willing to grind the hours and go through pain no one else can tolerate.
And that's why we are winning.
Welcome Chander - to the next decade.
On Christmas Eve 2019, Michael Seibel, then CEO of YC, called me: “You might not be cut out to be a founder.” He was right. We had pivoted 20 times. I thought I could always return to my 7-figure quant job. That night, I realized: you commit or you quit. Fast forward: Motion raised $60M at $550M. Michael is now a personal investor.
I built this after losing countless hours to mindless browsing.
Intentional App Chrome extension lets you block distracting sites with two clicks and set custom schedules for when they're accessible.
Startup idea for a money-printing business:
Start an accountant firm in Germany that:
- Knows what Stripe is
- Actually accepts new clients
- Uses Email
That's it. If you just manage these three things I'll recommend a new paying customer to you every week!
✨ Total costs for all my non-AI sites are now at a new low of $979/mo, so finally sub $1K/mo!
And a very nice >99% profit margin
So for every $1 I make, I now take home $0.99 (pre tax)
I know the tendency in startups (especially if you're VC funded) is to splurge and spend money and hire and get a big office, but I'm trying to do the opposite for no other reason than:
"Is it possible to build a 100% automated and super lean business with >99% profits?"
And I think it is
To compare my costs a year ago before cost cutting were about 30x that
Tip if you wanna do this: enable sticky push notifications on your business banking app (in my case Wise Business) so you see EVERY SINGLE PAYMENT, then see if that payment is actually essential
Cost savings:
- Saved $2,251/mo disabling Backblaze infinite versioning and now it's $6/mo for 1TB for my server backups
- Saved $687/mo at Digital Ocean by downgrading to a $4/mo droplet and 1TB volume also for server backups
- Managed to downgrade to a lower Scrapingbee plan at $99/mo for my scraping + screenshots
- X API is now $175/mo because I paid anually, so we save $25/mo
- Cancelled a lot of SaaS and APIs I didn't use anymore, there's SO many that just charge you but you don't realize!
- Mapbox became $0 now either cause Nomads map traffic went down or their pricing changed
I investigated the Cloudflare bill and it seems very worth it, I'm on a custom Enterprise plan and I heavily use it for Image Resizing on Photo AI and Interior AI, and yes I could do that myself but in the end I think it's worth it because the ease of Cloudflare image resizing is so nice, you just type the URL of your pic and add a Cloudflare URL in front of it with width=600 and now you got a 600px wide pic
I say non-AI, because my AI sites are so much more expensive due to GPU usage, but also still reasonable: $24,000/mo, which is now 96% of my costs! Also most of the Cloudflare and DevOps bill is now Photo AI and Interior AI so that isn't counted with the non-AI sites anymore, as the other sites just run automated now
For AI sites the profit margin is 87%, still healthy
I guess my frugal 🇳🇱 Dutchness is finally coming out!
omfg I can't wait to throw out all my alexa/google devices in 2025 and replace them with couple of these bad boys (local voice, no cloud, custom llm, custom commands, custom text to speech, etc.)
I've got multiple products on @PaddleHQ and they allow only one webhook URL for notifications. Is there a way to set different URL it per each product? It would be much more convenient.
