I started medical school 29 years ago and until the last couple of years, always believed that modern medicine was the savior to all our ills.
I’d dismiss as unscientific those who said they had used acupuncture. I’d quietly snigger under my breath when a patient told me how yoga rather than sertraline was helpful for their stress.
Worst of all, I’d sneer in an arrogance in a way only those who don’t know what they don’t know can sneer, if someone talked about why they took various vitamins or supplements.
As a junior Doctor it was commonplace to be taken out for posh dinners by drug reps who then gave us biased information which seeped down in our medical psyche to discount the importance of healthy living and discounting any “alternative” medical practice,
There are many cases where modern medicine is lifesaving - from the man in his 60s with a cardiac arrest who we bring back to life with a defibrillator, to the teenager with appendicitis who gets better with an emergency operation modern, western medicine, not only works well but is lifesaving.
But for many others, the medical model, so indoctrinated into our medical psyche is clearly failing; from the patients with chronic back pain, dosed up on addictive but not particularly effective opioid pain killers to the patients with insomnia, whose prescribed sleeping tablets leads to a lifetime of dependency and ill health.
In this week’s health section of the mail – I have looked at some studies – performed to the highest levels of scientific rigour which have made me reevaluate some of my preconceived ideas and prejudices about how best to treat plain and sleep issues.
My conclusion is that modern medicine absolutely is lifesaving. But it is not the golden panacea to a healthy life and we need to reevaluate our medical model if we truly want to improve our health.
We need to use the best avaialble evidence and incorporate the best of modern medicine, other systems of care such as mindfullness, yoga and acupuncture with healthy living. Only then can we truly improve our health as well as our life expectancy.
