I usually get asked, “isn’t Government funding eNL Mutual Bank? They’re just watching you suffer without at least funding the first majority black women owned bank?”

The answer has always been consistent, NO, Government is not funding us, Government has never reached out to try to fund us, the only person ever that reached out was Ntate Hlaudi Motsoeneng when he was at the SABC, everyone else, nothing.

Having said that, our eNL Mutual Bank story starts when the Department of Small Business Development invited me to Switzerland to represent South African business women in Switzerland, it was an all expenses paid trip, I came back from that trip not with money but an idea that will change millions of lives, rebuild our communities and give communities an opportunity to own piece of the economy.

This week SEDFA took about 20 Entrepreneurs to Cape Town on an all expenses paid trip to the Global Economic Congress Africa, networked with other entrepreneurs not just in South Africa but across the continent.

Who knows what this fully funded trip will bring in the future? Maybe something beyond money or something that money can’t buy.

Would I have loved Government funding into eNL Mutual Bank? Absolutely YES, money is one thing we desperately need.

Has that stopped us from working towards operationalising the Bank? NO.

As entrepreneurs and particularly black entrepreneurs, access to capital is one of those things that we are excluded from, for majority of us we are excluded from the system and this is why we spent over 12 years building eNL Mutual Bank and QALO YA AFRIKA.

We have no choice but to get the communities involved in our businesses as investors, it’s the only way we’re going to scale businesses and create jobs.
