@aliyapabani If you believe that Israeli's themselves are some evil incarnate then yes, this is a non-starter. I believe Israeli's and Palestinian's are people who for the most part are desperate for peace and I see humanity on both sides. That is the only path forward
@aliyapabani I support Israel, I do not support the current government's actions. I supported the Rabin government and all Israeli governments working towards peace. I do not support Hamas. I support the Palestinian right to peace.
@aliyapabani I'm not recasting it as Jewish targetting. My argument is it presents itself that way (maybe not to you, but it will to somebody). And frankly supporting Israel versus supporting the actions of its government are two different things.
@aliyapabani Accusations of genocide are not confirmation of guilt. You are saying that accusations are the 'just' reason for profiling people without their consent in an increasingly hostile and unsafe environment . Our law does not operate on "accusations"
@aliyapabani You are not understanding my perspective. For a thought experiment, if this was a website identifying Muslim Cdns who joined ISIS and the institutions that support it, and the avergae Muslim Cdn said that it does specific damage to their community, would you agree?
@NoLore@Mark_Goldberg@JesseBrown@DavideMastracci@readthemaple I think a lot of the rising anti-semitism in Canada is self-inherently proving to many Jews of the reason for Israel's existence and I don't think for most that is because anti-semitism is being utilized to drum up support for Israel. This is generational trauma in our lived exp
@NoLore@Mark_Goldberg@JesseBrown@DavideMastracci@readthemaple I've been trying to understand this perspective. I think it is a difficult line. I would consider myself a Zionist, but not in the negative perjorative way in how some define it (in the sense of Jewish self-determination).
@NoLore@Mark_Goldberg@JesseBrown@DavideMastracci@readthemaple Supporting Israel and its existence is something most Jews will do, it is inherent to our culture and religious practice. And we do so while wanting peace for the region. Blaming Canadian Jews for the actions of the Israeli government is a hateful position.
@aliyapabani A website sharing a list of Jewish citizens and institutions will strike fear in many Jews given our recent past. We have been a target of hate and violence in Canada since October 7th, and I find it difficult how anyone can view this website as not potentially stoking flames
@aliyapabani The premise that this website is "just" is based on the idea that Israel and it's citizens are genocidal. On principal I find that to be disingenous at best, and in fact the ICJ has never said Israel is comitting genocide (https://t.co/cOXyNvgvwv).
@NoLore@Mark_Goldberg@JesseBrown@DavideMastracci@readthemaple The horseshoe theory (https://t.co/6nTxTCANMN) is seemingly proving more and more correct from an extreme right and left ideology coalescing around various topics, and especially around hatred of jews.
@NoLore@Mark_Goldberg@JesseBrown@DavideMastracci@readthemaple Right-wing antisemitism is what I know and grew up with. Charlottesville ("jews will not replace us") still exists in my mind loudly. But this is not the same as what has happened in Canada since Oct. 7 and Jesse is correct to call out this new version of anti-jewish hate
@NoLore@Mark_Goldberg@JesseBrown@DavideMastracci@readthemaple I am concerned about the safety of my community in Canada, while acknowleding the horror of war in Israel/Palestine (and hoping lasting peace can be achieved). Jesse is the only journalist who seems to try to give a voice to the documented rise in anti-jewish hate in Canada.
@NoLore@Mark_Goldberg@JesseBrown@DavideMastracci@readthemaple I am being serious, trying to engage you honestly and in good faith. You can disregard the fear of the Canadian Jewish community all you want, but it does not mean that it is misplaced.
If, god forbid, there are attacks at these instutitons, I hope you will reconsider your take
