Category 5 dust storm!

Early indications are that last night's haboob that moved through the Phoenix metro area was a Category 5 dust storm, only the 5th in the last 16 years.

Dust storms that move through the Phoenix metro area are classified by their dust concentration, along with (secondarily) their spatial coverage, duration, and strength of wind gusts. Slight risk expands slightly northwestward to include more of the Tucson metro, but no major changes.

Metro Phoenix is still in the general t-storm risk, but we'll see if any outflows kick off either thunderstorms or blowing dust like last night. #azwx

@AZStormChase My visibility here in central Mesa dropped to about 1/4 mile. I thought it was weird that they didnt continue the dust storm warning into Phoenix until I saw it was just widespread 1-3 mi visibility so it made sense why it was downgraded but there were definitely denser pockets

For those wondering why a Dust Storm Warning was not issued, NWS Phoenix criteria for a DSW is 1/4 mile visibility. While the visibility was significantly reduced, not only did it not meet NWS criteria but also its literally 11pm so why wake up 5 million people #azwx

Winds were gusting at over 40mph through the metro. I dont wanna make assumptions but im assuming downed power lines ignited brush in the area. Its been so dry, so it lit up like a tinderbox
