That's how much MA enrollment for CVS/Aetna increased from Dec. 23 to Jan. 24
Overall, MA enrollment increased 2.5%, up from last year, but lower than the prior year
Feb. data is typically needed to get a complete picture of AEP growth so take this with a grain of salt
-In 2011 Cigna reportedly purchased HealthSpring MA members for $10,000 per, though they were likely purchasing the MA operations and human capital as well.
What is the (financial) value of an MA member to an Insurance Carrier?
Here is a simple calculation ->
Based on Molinaโs purchase of Bright Healthโs block itโs ~$3,542 per member.
NOTE:
-as of 9/30/23 the block was running a ~90% loss ratio and was generating a operating loss, so there is work to do to get the block to profitability.
-Molina likely had leverage in this given Brightโs financial issues pushing the valuation down.
Top 5 MS Carriers - Market Share (by enrollment):
-UHC (39%)
-Carefirst BCBS
-Mutual of Omaha
-CVS
-Cigna
The MA and MS penetration are surprisingly low relative to other states. This indicates a big opportunity!
In Medicare each state is it's own unique market.
Today we are looking at Maryland!
Here are the enrollment stats (these surprised me):
Total Medicare Eligibles (YE '22): 1,101,483
-1.9% YoY growth
Total MA Enrollment (YE '22): 211,528
-19.0% YoY growth
