The West humiliated Russia in the 1990s. This war is the consequence.’
I’ve heard this in every language, from every podium. It is history rewritten backwards.
Recall what actually happened to defeated Russia: no occupation. No reparations. No tribunal. It kept its nuclear arsenal and its UN veto. Its debts were forgiven and refinanced. It was handed IMF billions and a seat at the G8 — a club of democracies admitting a wounded autocracy out of hope.
Now recall an actually humiliated nation: Germany, 1945. Occupied. Partitioned. Cities in ash, leaders hanged, guilt taught to its children by law.
Germany became the most peaceful democracy in Europe. Russia became this.
So spare me the humiliation theory. Russia was not humiliated after the Cold War. It was indulged — and it read every kindness as weakness, every gift as tribute.
The grievance was never mistreatment. The grievance was lost dominion.
Empires do not mourn their wounds. They mourn their slaves.
BREAKING: US Treasury eases oil sanctions on the Kremlin, allowing Indian refineries to buy the millions of barrels of Russian crude on floating storage until early April (the new rules cover all the oil already loaded in a tanker by March 5, 2026). Massive win for Putin.
Update on the evacuation of Europeans from the Gulf:
So far, only Germany, Czechia & Slovakia have communicated evacuation plans for their citizens. They are getting them out of UAE/Qatar/Bahrain/Kuwait via ground transport across the desert to 🇸🇦Saudi Arabia, 🇴🇲Oman & 🇯🇴Jordan, whose airspace is still open.
For some reason the 🇪🇺Commission has not yet triggered the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to coordinate these evacuation efforts so it's every country for themselves for now.
🇫🇷&🇬🇧 have told their stranded citizens to register in a database but have not yet told them what to do.
🇮🇹 evacuated their stranded defence minister (who incredibly decided to take a family vacation to Dubai on Friday night) via a military aircraft, but hasn't helped the stranded Italian civilians.
Heres's a summary of what each country is doing for their citizens from Euractiv. That there is no coordinated European action on this seems like an enormous failure.

“Where Europe has federated: on trade, on competition, on the single market, on monetary policy, we are respected as a power," said Draghi.
"Where we have not: on defence, on industrial policy, on foreign affairs, we are treated as a loose assembly of middle-sized states, to be divided & dealt with accordingly.”
The man who once saved the Eurozone from itself now wants to save the EU from America.
"Power requires Europe to move from confederation to federation,” said Draghi. The EU’s current model of a 27-state confederation with individual veto rights on key issues “does not produce power” but “a group of states . . . each vulnerable to being picked off one by one”.
“We are all in the same position of vulnerability, whether we see it yet or not,” he said. “The old divisions that paralysed us have been overtaken by a common threat. But threat alone will not sustain us. What began in fear must continue in hope.”
