ALEX KARP $PLTR ON SHORT SELLERS TODAY ON CNBC:
"I love burning the short sellers. Like almost nothing makes a human happier than taking the lines of coke away from these short sellers that are going short on a truly great American company. They love pulling down American companies so they can pay for their coke. The best thing that can happen for them is we will lead their coke dealers to their homes after they can't pay their bills. Do your thing, we will do our thing."
Oh. My. Goodness.
$PYPL In a few weeks, PayPal's Xoom service will allow users to send their $PYUSD stablecoin with no fees to over 160 countries, which is instantly converted into the end-user's desired currency.
How does this work, and how will PayPal make money off of it? 👇🏽
HOW IT WORKS NOW
Users pay fees based on their deposit type. Quite a few fees are already $0, but bank deposits and cash pickup carries a fee.
These funds usually need to be from settled / available sources. Settlement times can vary on the other end depending on the country, but the transfer usually takes a few minutes, up to several days.
There is also a currency conversion fee. Xoom doesn't give the best rate here. More on that below.
HOW IT WORKS WITH $PYUSD
There are a couple significant changes.
- Instant settlement times.
- No transaction fees. It doesn't matter if it's cash pickup, deposited in a bank account, or on a debit card.
Since $PYUSD has near-instant settlement times, you can also use unsettled funds to buy $PYUSD, then instantly send a remittance via Xoom.
HOW DOES PAYPAL MAKE MONEY HERE?
PayPal still charges a currency conversion fee on the other end. You can think of this as similar to Robinhood's Payment for Order Flow. IE, PayPal doesn't give the best rate for the conversion but offers no fees instead of other models (such as Wise) which offer better conversion, but has fees.
HOW DO THEY COMPARE TO WISE?
Wise is one of the leaders for international remittances and is rapidly growing. They're regarded a bit more highly than Xoom, but much of the reason is due to the fees. Wise is very inexpensive.
$PYUSD allows PayPal faster settlement times at a competitive overall rate vs Wise, and gives flexibility to use unsettled funds.
PayPal's expenses here is a small gas fee for using the Etherium network. As such, they almost certainly have higher margins on this product using their own stablecoin than Wise.
Here's a Wise comparison to Xoom. In this example, Wise actually ends up slightly ahead of PayPal's product. Usually that's not the case with cards, but it is the case with ACH / Bank / Wise balances (all which required settled funds to use).
FINAL THOUGHTS
This change puts Xoom back into competition with Wise in terms of cost. In some cases, Xoom is cheaper to use, and in others, the settlement time and ability to use unsettled funds may give Xoom the edge here.
I don't think Wise will go away, but PayPal's stablecoins helps Xoom be able to offer no fees without destroying PayPal's margins.
