“They say it takes as much time to build something small as to build something big. May as well go big. I’m 42 & learning a lot.” - NBA Champ @MettaSandiford at @newmediaventure summit on launching a billion $ investment fund.
Advice on raising money? “Keep going, be honest, be selective, & don’t take rejections personally. It’s not about you. Know what you’re trying to do, what is going to work for you, & keep going.” - @hillarylehr at @newmediaventure summit
Loving this conversation at @newmediaventure Summit on funding progressive tech for good. “No one is going to believe in your product more than you.” - @ch3ryl 🔥
The videos were compelling. The evidence was damning. But the most emotional moments in the first hearing came from Caroline Edwards ‘slipping in people’s blood.’

Made it to @fastforwardorg Demo Day at @ybca. Inspired by @joinfreew0rld keynote by founder who went through the criminal justice system himself as a teen. “I think this is the first time I’ve seen an accelerator with only founders w/lived experience of problems they work on.”

Celebrating this bright spot of good news, amidst all the bad -- congrats to my partner in crime, and favorite local news expert😂, on being awarded tenure! What a journey. Excited for this next chapter for you! ❤️
We still have a massive gap when it comes to funding tech that puts long-term impact, social good, privacy, & racial equity front & center. Good read on some of the ways forward: 👇🏼by @lyelr & @WilneidaNegron of @teamcoworker
“Actions funders take in the next few years could speed the transformation needed to ensure that the next generation of Big Tech is grounded in the public interest.” @lyelr & @wilneidanegron on how to mobilize early-stage funding for #PublicInterestTech. https://t.co/A1E84VfBOe
Want to be a better leader? Find ways to make your energy contagious, build positive trusting relationships, and uplift others, according to @HBR. Not easy during pandemic / war / uncertain times, but essential to the leadership toolkit! https://t.co/vyq4P6cH3G
Many leaders are seeking more than the traditional “top-down” org chart model. Curious to hear from others with “circular” org charts & how this supports (or doesn’t) team cohesion, clarity, & empowerment.
Her exploration of the tension between achievement and the pursuit of liberation in our work is fascinating— Mission, vision, values, metaphor by Hanna Thomas Uose: https://t.co/N9P5A8hjbc
“Many collaborators know well that community-led change is emergent and nonlinear. Yet, the underlying assumptions and practices of traditional philanthropy often conflict with this reality.”
Good read on how the funding community can build trust with community leaders. 👍🏼
What does it look like to build trust? Victor Tavarez, John Harper & Fay Hanleybrown (@FSGtweets) offer suggestions for funders to be humble learners and operate with transparency. Part of a new series on collective impact, sponsored by @CIForumTweets. https://t.co/6x1tQamekT
I spent most of 2021 off Twitter to focus on my daughter - born in Feb! - and on consulting for amazing groups. My 2022 Twitter intention is to regularly (~few times/wk) share inspiring or thought-provoking reads while staying grounded & balanced. What’s yours? Tips? 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
Provocative & powerful: “Adaptation requires the humility to accept that we have a lot to learn, even from the smallest of organisms, or a single strand of chromosomes that happen to carry the genetic material needed to eat methane, a primary driver of climate change.”
Borgs are a newly-discovered linear chromosome that could help to control greenhouse gas emissions. But true adaptation requires humility as well as ingenuity.

Misinfo & lies can kill— as much as a virus. Radio host’s brother shares his message of regret & desire for anyone who can to vaccinate as soon as possible. Whopping 97% in hospitals for #COVID19 are unvaccinated, reports @CNN.
"The death of conservative radio host Phil Valentine due to Covid-19 should make many in the conservative mediatic ecosystem stop misinforming their audiences on the pandemic and the effectiveness of the vaccines," Dean Obeidallah writes. | @CNNOpinion https://t.co/Rrg5rM4NnS
Indeed— much of the time “low overhead” means lack of investment in effective management, technology, systems, innovation...a downward spiral driven by fundraising (which also requires overhead). The lack of hands-on experience (by boards, funders) is a real challenge here.
Mission Oxygen is importing oxygen concentrators to donate to hospitals in India. If you're able to support their work, please do. You'll get a signed book from one of us to thank you. Thread below with info. Grateful to Sonia for leading this—
