#WATCH | #Manipur: An indefinite shutdown has been declared across all Kuki-Zo areas, effective from midnight of March 8, in protest against the government's "Free Movement" initiative. The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has announced staunch opposition to the policy, demanding a political solution for the Kuki-Zo community as a prerequisite for lasting peace in the region.

Tensions escalated following the state government’s decision to facilitate the movement of Meitei people into Kuki-Zo areas, despite repeated warnings against such actions. Violent confrontations broke out between security forces escorting buses and Kuki-Zo protesters, resulting in the death of Mr. Lalgun Singsit of Keithelmanbi and severe injuries to multiple demonstrators, including women. Reports confirm that at least one protester succumbed to gunfire by security personnel, while two others remain in critical condition. Over 50 women protesters have sustained serious injuries, further intensifying resentment within the community.

The KZC has strongly condemned the government's insistence on enforcing the "Free Movement" policy, accusing it of ignoring warnings and disregarding the community’s sentiments. Protesters, particularly Kuki-Zo women, have rallied against the decision, highlighting their concerns over security and forced demographic changes. The use of excessive force by security personnel has only deepened the crisis, fueling fears of further unrest.

The KZC asserts that while peace is desirable, it cannot be imposed through coercion. Sustainable peace, the council emphasized, must be built on mutual respect and understanding, rather than actions that disproportionately impact a particular community.

Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCSO)- the organisers of the so called peace rally from Imphal to Senapati, to provoke the Kuki-Zo tribals, should be held responsible for the unfortunate incident in Kangpokpi District today. Also, Security forces under #PresidentsRule are expected to respect the sentiments of tribal people and maintain neutrality at the least, instead of colluding with insterest of only a particular community; scores of Kuki-Zo women are injured and a person killed today due to the indiscriminate firing of SFs.
