"Do you believe people ever get over grief?"
"No."
"Then how do they keep living?"
"They stop expecting life to wait for them."
"...That sounds lonely."
"It is."
"So why does everyone keep saying it gets easier?"
"They're trying to comfort you."
"I don't want comfort."
"What do you want?"
"The truth."
Silence settled between us as the bus pulled into view.
After a while, they spoke again.
"I think you're wrong."
I looked at them.
"I hope I am."
"No... I think grief does get smaller."
"I don't."
"It has to."
"Why?"
"Because if it doesn't, what's the point of surviving it?"
I watched the doors fold open.
"Maybe surviving was never the point."
They shook their head.
"I can't believe that."
"I know."
They stepped onto the bus.
"You should come."
"Not today."
The doors closed between us.
As the bus pulled away, I realised neither of us had changed the other's mind.
Maybe that wasn't what the conversation had been for.
