William Ruto spent years presenting himself as a politician who could survive insults, hostile headlines, opposition attacks and endless public criticism, so it is genuinely fascinating to watch him suddenly develop such remarkably thin skin around the media.

A man who campaigned under relentless scrutiny now appears increasingly irritated whenever journalists question his government, challenge his promises or publish stories he does not like, which is a strange transformation for somebody who once sold himself as politically battle hardened.

The Standard Media Group has become one of his favourite targets, and every fresh attack only raises the obvious question about when criticism stopped being part of democracy and started becoming something the President personally needed to fight.

Power clearly changes people, because the politician who once demanded space to attack everyone now seems increasingly uncomfortable when the same freedom is used to examine his own government, his record and the people around him.

Perhaps the biggest mystery is not why the media criticises William Ruto, but how a politician who survived Kenya’s roughest political battles suddenly became this allergic to newspapers, headlines and uncomfortable questions.
