In 1887, Black sugar workers in Louisiana went on strike. Their demand: about $1.25 a day, paid in MONEY, instead of company scrip.

The answer was a massacre.

Ten thousand workers, organized with the Knights of Labor, walked out of the cane fields at harvest. Planters called in the state militia. Then, when the militia withdrew, armed white vigilantes sealed off the town of Thibodaux and went door to door through the Black quarter.

At least thirty-five men, women, and youths were killed; credible estimates run far higher, into the uncounted.

Strike leaders were singled out and executed. Survivors fled to the swamps.

Prosecutions: none. Ever. Black workers were murdered for demanding to be paid fairly—and no one was ever held accountable.

In hindsight, one feels very dumb for having taken certain well-promoted narratives at face value.

2 of the very worst of these are "Kenya doesn't have resources" and "Northern Nigeria is poor".

Believing these 2 absolute whoppers as an African is the base layer on the road to completely misunderstanding where you live and what is happening in the world.

You almost have to give the liars credit because getting presumably educated people to believe such absolute nonsense is a truly impressive feat of social engineering. If you can make people believe that violent conflict mineral trafficking in northern Nigeria is "Islamic terrorism", and Kenyan elephants getting fatally poisoned by runoff from gold mining was "elephants eating cyanide tomatoes" then what can't you make people believe?

when I was doing my BSc in political science, I used to glaze over revolution as the only solution to Nigeria’s problems.

but after my several touch-points with reality, I have come to a higher realization that in our bid to sail towards a place of Eldorado, if we by chance toe the line of revolution, people like you and I would first be killed by this kind of people. if that happens, we have lost the revolution. it will just swiftly turn to a looting exercise with no direction.
