WHY do we divide by n-1 when computing the sample variance?

I've never seen this way of explaining this concept anywhere else.

I started this morning with a mandatory workplace safety training that included too much detail on Run, Hide, Fight. Like, the information is good, but the fact that I have to do it in 2023 makes me want to flip a desk.
