This is the current compatibility list. There might be some changes do to unknown sub variants. But I feel its pretty solid.

Different models have different GS chips.

So there is already a "PS2" with true digital video output: The Original Japanese PS3!
It has all the PS2 hardware (EE+GS), and captures the digital output from the GS and encodes it over HDMI :P
