New reporting from City Reporter shows Black unemployment in NYC is nearly 9%.
As a lifelong New Yorker and emergency physician, I see this as more than an economic issue. Employment shapes housing, food security, stress, access to care, and long-term health.
I talked with @DanaBashCNN today about what a Jewish and democratic Israel — consistent with its own Declaration of Independence, and something I long to see — would actually look like. A few key points:
1. Israel can't be a genuine democracy while it's occupying the West Bank & Gaza and denying civil & political rights to Palestinians there, fully half the people under its rule.
2. Like B’Tselem, Omer Bartov, and the Lemkin Institute, I think — with deep sadness — that Israel's conduct in Gaza meets the definition of genocide. But even if you don’t, it’s profoundly inconsistent with the Jewish value that every one of those Palestinian kids were created in the image of God, just like ours.
3. The freedom, safety & thriving of both Israelis and Palestinians is deeply intertwined. Israelis will not be safe until Palestinians are free. We need a U.S. foreign policy aimed firmly at making this real.
Shabbat Shalom to everyone, and especially to everyone who refuses to compromise on anyone else’s humanity.
NEW: Democratic Senators led by @ChrisVanHollen are urging colleagues not to advance the annual Pentagon authorization bill unless amendments are considered to strip out a controversial section that would massively increase military cooperation with Israel

"We need three things from any AI transition—the right to join a union, a human-first policy, and the working class to benefit from the extra value we generate." — UAW President Shawn Fain
A historic statement from a Spanish MEP holding her child in the European Parliament:
“When my child asks me in a few years what Europe did to stop the war on Gaza’s children, I want to be able to tell him that we did not look the other way. We apply strict laws in Ukraine and ignore Palestine; we must act immediately to end the occupation and save Gaza.”
There it is: AIPAC drastically ramping up their spending to oppose former Rep. Cori Bush in #MO01, adding $600,000 to their investment for a total of $1.14M so far this cycle.
Election day is Aug. 4 — still plenty of time for more spending. https://t.co/HzQhlBHeFu
🚨 BREAKTHROUGH: Scientists have created a sugar-coated nanoparticle that blocks COVID-19 from infecting cells with 99% effectiveness in lab tests.
This isn't a vaccine. It's a decoy.
And it could change how we fight viruses forever.
Here’s how it works.🧵
“We are ready to go back to work and Mass General Brigham is locking us out.”
Nurses who participated in Massachusetts’s biggest healthcare workers strike in state history detail the union busting efforts by MGB. More than 4,000 nurses walked off the job on Wednesday to demand better pay, benefits, and safer working conditions.
Across this state and country, working people are demanding a new kind of government. One that puts our needs over the greed of corporations. One that invests our money in our communities, not wastes it on endless wars and tax cuts for billionaires.
I know whose side I'm on.
Kristol's framing here is worth sitting with directly because it inverts the argument this administration has spent a decade making. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo is the version of the American Dream Republicans claim to be defending. Thirty five years of work. A business that gave other men jobs. Three sons pushed through college specifically so they would not have to labor in the sun the way he did. He was in the process of legally regularizing his status, filling out paperwork, providing fingerprints, doing the thing every immigration hardliner insists people should do instead of staying undocumented.
He did the thing, and his own government shot him anyway, then went silent. More than six hundred open misconduct complaints are currently sitting with the DHS inspector general, a number large enough that this case is not an aberration inside that count, it is one more entry in a pattern the government's own watchdog office is already tracking. Kristol's line lands because it is not really about Lorenzo at all. It is about what it says when the people running the country cannot manage a fraction of the discipline, humility, or accountability that a construction worker who never wanted his own children to see him in pain managed for three decades without anyone asking him to.
During a 60 day period the LAPD got 161 license plate reader hits for stolen cars that were NOT actually stolen.
That means 161 INNOCENT car occupants had guns pulled on them w/helicopter overhead, ordered to lay on ground, handcuffed, searched and detained for 20-45 mins.
🏛️As of July 11, at least 10 of the 535 sitting members of Congress have publicly called for the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.
Israel has held the pediatrician without charge since Dec. 27, 2024, after detaining him during a raid on the hospital. Rights groups and his family say he is nearing death after being tortured, starved, and denied adequate medical care in Israeli custody.
1. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md.: Said Abu Safiya’s life was in immediate danger following torture and mistreatment and that “he must be released immediately.”
2. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., 12th District: Wrote, “Free Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya,” calling him a hero targeted for saving lives as director of Kamal Adwan Hospital “amid genocide.”
3. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.: Said Israel “kidnapped him” for refusing to abandon his patients and “he must be released.”
4. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., 4th District: Called on Israel to immediately release all 84 detained Palestinian health workers, including Abu Safiya, whom she described as reportedly near death after torture and starvation.
5. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., 7th District: Said he “must be released immediately” and called on Congress to stop sending taxpayer money that makes the U.S. complicit in the abuses.
6. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., 18th District: Said Abu Safiya must be released for immediate medical care, along with “any other prisoners being arbitrarily detained.”
7. Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., 3rd District: Called on the Trump administration to use “every diplomatic tool available” to secure his release and compel Israel to comply with international humanitarian law.
8. Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., 8th District: Said Abu Safiya must be released immediately to receive medical care and “continue his lifesaving work in Gaza.”
9. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., 14th District: Said Israel “must release” Abu Safiya, warning that he faces an “imminent threat to his life” from torture and medical neglect.
10. Rep. Valerie Foushee, D-N.C., 4th District: Demanded his immediate release for medical treatment and said he must be permitted to return to Gaza to continue his work.
We will continue updating this list as more legislators call for Dr. Abu Safiya’s release and will add any names we may have missed below. ⬇️ 🧵

The Democratic Party can become the party of labor again. Together, with my union brothers & sisters at the @MEAFLCIO by my side, we will make it happen. Solidarity forever.
Amid all the corruption, this is especially gross: the billions Congress/Biden approved to build fiber internet in places left behind has been redirected to Elon Musk & Jeff Bezos for doing nothing. Musk has pocketed $738 million so far. Places like rural Louisiana were screwed.
I’m driving the 750-mile stretch from El Paso to the Rio Grande Valley and holding town halls along the way.
We’re showing up for border communities that have been left behind by both political parties for too long.

ICE is detaining so many people that it has started using military bases. Reports from some bases say the food and water aren’t safe, and that people were moved there before it was ready.
We FOIAed for inspection reports and complaints about conditions.
Trump has tried to pit Americans against one another to distract from the real fight: the fact that he and his billionaire buddies are rigging the system against workers.
We must call it out at every turn.
JUST IN: It's over. Judge Kelly has granted DOJ's motion to dismiss the J6 seditious conspiracy case against Proud Boys leaders.
He takes a couple parting shots, suggesting Trump's view of the case is based on "fiction" and notes the prosecution started under Trump's presidency.

After losing in court, the Trump admin is now threatening election officials in Maryland and across the country to get access to voter rolls.
This is yet another outrageous attempt to sow doubt in our democracy & intimidate states.
We must hold the line.
