It's #NationalDandelionDay in the UK
@Love_plants say that 8 Dandelions may produce enough nectar to meet a bumblebee’s basic energy needs
These aren't weeds, they're vital food for pollinators

Biodiversity Tip No. 3. 'Let wildflowers grow'
Great for non-farmed areas, verges, field margins or corners.
🐝Keep area fertiliser and pesticide free.
🐝Maintain with an annual cut and lift, or graze off at the end of the summer.

With the Dandelions blooming, there's no better time for this weekend's read: a blog from our archives by @donnarainey4 all about #DontMowLetItGrow, a project to restore species-rich grassland in Northern Ireland.

A soil-dwelling nematophagous (nematode-eating) fungus trapping and consuming a pathogenic nematode.
These specialist fungi detect the presence of nematodes in the soil by perceiving the pheromones the microscopic worms use to communicate.
The fungi modify their hyphae into hooklike snares to trap and constrict their prey.
When the snare is ready, the fungi lure the pathogenic nematodes in by producing olfactory cues that mimic those nematodes use to eat and reproduce.
Then the nematode slithers through the snare, and the fungal hyphae constrict, immobilizing the nematode.
Sometimes referred to as carnivorous, nematophagous fungi exist in healthy soil ecosystems and provide a vital bio-control against pathogenic nematodes that would otherwise cause significant crop damage.
And to think we've only named and described ~2% of the life in the soil...
Species #3 Red Dead-nettle
Bumblebees ❤️ Red dead-nettle, it's an important source of nectar for food and pollen for protein to build up their nest.

“Sustainable farming practices must conserve soil biodiversity & soil health so that future food production is not sacrificed for short-term gain…as we lose species from the soil, the ability of soil ecosystems to recover…is reduced.” @y_buckley#Soil
