Akira Kurosawa recounting the unforgettable experience of watching Solaris with Andrei Tarkovsky:
“Andrei Tarkovsky was sitting in the corner of the screening room watching Solaris with me, but he got up as soon as the film was over and looked at me with a shy smile. I said to him, ‘It’s very good. It’s a frightening movie.’ He seemed embarrassed but smiled happily. Then the two of us went to a film union restaurant and toasted with vodka. Tarkovsky, who does not usually drink, got completely drunk and cut off the speakers at the restaurant, then began singing the theme of Seven Samurai at the top of his voice. I joined in, eager to keep up. At that moment, I was very happy to be on Earth.”
"It’s my manor!"
"Not any more Harold, they're taking it away from you."
One of the great movie endings. Without a word Hoskins conveys shock, anger, denial, negotiation, depression then acceptance.
Have a better one than Harold.
Cheltenham but make it honest:
Horses whipped, horses collapsing, horses dying.
All so people in tweed can get drunk and bet on it.
This isn’t “tradition.” It’s abuse.
Animal cruelty with a dress code. 🐎💀

Bizarre fact:
In South Korea there’s a phrase known as “Leeds Days”, used by millions of people – even those with no awareness of the football club.
It goes back to Alan Smith, once seen as a huge young talent for England and Leeds United, whose career never quite hit the heights expected after his 2004 move to Manchester United.
To refer to someone’s “Leeds Days” is to talk about the moment their life peaked, before everything started going downhill.
An amazing award-winning photograph by Darren Pateman as players in a 3rd grade game at Cessnock on October 19th 2002 realise how close to them the fire has come. Pateman was on his way to photograph the fire when he spotted the match in progress. The game went on. Asked why, Mark Williams, leaning on his bat, said: "We just wanted a result. And once you start, you don’t like to go off, do you?”
“The sky is white as clay, with no sun. / Work has to be done. / Postmen, like doctors, go from house to house.”
