@epnohelty Huh, almost as though they also want to reform the bureaucracy to make it more streamlined, functional, and humane in the process.
What, do you think government is some monolith that exists outside our reach? Hogwash. We can change it all for the better.
When you force landlords to compete for tenants, it completely shifts the power dynamic. This is why housing abundance is so key for our standard of living and economic security.
I had the good luck to be shopping for San Francisco apartments when vacancy hit 11%. Landlords were calling me back offering 6 weeks of free rent, new in-unit laundry, and rent cuts.
We settled on a place and paid 40% less than the previous tenants.
I want that for everyone.
@big_pedestrian I don't contend that systems exist. I contend that NYC/NYS bureaucracy is nightmarish, baroque, and often inhumane to navigate - which creates an effective barrier to adoption across the board.
@olekloss@mcmansionhell Perhaps - but even the genuinely well executed originators of this style don't undo the banality its inspired across the board.
Styles like this or brutalism may be breathtaking or beautiful when executed well - but the majority of attempts are utterly bland and sterile.
@iamericvalley@mcmansionhell Excellent? In what kind of mad world is a glass rectangle excellence?
One day, the architectural profession will pull its head out of its collective rear and realize that their taste is utterly reviled by the majority of people - and for good reason. Astounding arrogance.
@reed_alissa@big_pedestrian Buying higher quality shoes that last is less expensive than buying cheap shoes that need constant replacement. C'mon man, who hasn't ready Terry Pratchett at this point?
And you can grab used cellphones on Amazon for cheap, and a cell phone is a practical necessity. C'mon.
Tree cover in cities decreases temperatures by up to 10 degrees on hot summer days, saving billions of dollars and countless lives.
We should bring back nature to every city.
@_sn_n What a hideous house, even without the fascist decorations. I swear we should put national design ordinances in place that ban fake dormers and establish an absolute maximum number of roof faces per square foot of house so that we can stop with this jumbled nonsense. Also fuck em
@cammsyn Is it what I'd want or prefer? No. But why should that matter? If other people want to choose them, or if it's what they need, then *good*. We need not only enough housing but enough *variety* of different kinds of housing too. They all fill a niche.
@cammsyn I'd personally hate living in a shoebox apartment like this - but I'd hate it *infinitely* less than being housing insecure or even homeless. This is a modern SRO - and those used to be a cornerstone of the affordable housing supply. We need this to be legal everywhere.
