From our archives: “Stop blaming the climate for disasters,” says climatologist Friederike Otto.
Scientists are increasingly warning that blaming disasters solely on climate change lets policymakers off the hook for poor planning.

But if you are born today, chances are high that you will live on a much warmer planet and experience climate-related disruptions of all aspects of your life. The good (or maybe bad) news is that it's in our hands today to shape this future. Will it be 2, 3 or 4 degrees warmer?
@ProfMarkMaslin Fully endorse the message of your tweet but the data is not as clear as the graph suggests. I am currently working with the EM-DAT data. The increase is driven by improved reporting, population growth and economic growth too - not just climate change
@liz_stephens Great that you actually dug into this. I was always curious about the evidence backing up claims like this. Too bad that it's not really convincing.
@J_StoneUNDRR @UNDRR Fair point on the audience ;) I fully support the overall message but sometimes get frustrated that the climate conversation becomes too hazard focused
@J_StoneUNDRR @UNDRR Looking at absolute global numbers is also misleading. As a share of total global population or global asset value, the numbers for the last two decades would actually be smaller than for the preceeding ones. At country or local level this can of course look very different. 3/3
@J_StoneUNDRR @UNDRR The report is more nuanced. For example deaths in the last two decades were largely due to geophysical events, e.g. Indian Ocean Tsunami. The climate link might be there as you suggest but more indirect. 2/3
@RemoteLongitude I hoped for a cheaper and thus more inclusive ticket but it's still great progress. I was so excited when I bought it and am very curious to see how it will impact mobility and traffic in the coming months and years
@giulio_mattioli German government reduced subsidies for electric vehicles at the beginning of 2023. Lots of people got electric vehicles at the end of last year before the reduction and now there was a significant drop in demand: https://t.co/v0mi8dwEDh
@NathanB60857242@Leo_Glisic Lots of overlap between anarchism and libertarianism regarding the role of the state. Disagreement mostly around capitalism, private ownership, and focus on individual vs. collective
@NathanB60857242 1) Abolish borders. 2) Ensure that workers receive the value they produce. 3) Free everyone from material needs and social constrictions based on gender, sexuality, race, physical ability etc... not sure why that's left-wing and not just common sense
