Our photo of the month – Bumpy at breakfast.
He's at our Kaluku Neonate Unit in Tsavo, hand-fed by Keeper Joseph at the water's edge. His bottle feeds are easier than the wild equivalent. Baby hippos learn to nurse underwater, diving and resurfacing for breath between sips. Bumpy hasn't had to do any of that yet.
Adopt Bumpy and help us provide the care he needs to return to the wild: https://t.co/qAEjrv65WE
Today would have been Daphne Sheldrick's 92nd birthday. My mother never set out to be a titan of conservation. She began the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to continue my late father’s vision, guided by a love for all wild creatures and a desire to make a better world for them. She weathered so many challenges in her time, but remained unwaveringly true to herself and her beliefs.
Building success on success, never straying from this mission, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has grown into the far-reaching, multi-faceted conservation organisation we are today. I know Daphne and David would be so proud of all we have achieved.
It has been eight years since Daphne left us, but she remains in the forefront of our minds. She was an unassuming woman who achieved so much just by pursuing her passion for animals and the natural world.
Daphne always said, “You reap what you sow” — and my goodness, what has been sown over the years.

Henry Nowak’s family have spoken with remarkable dignity, asking that his death not become a source of further division, but a catalyst for safer streets and a more compassionate society. Their words remind us that every life is precious, every loss is felt, and every act of violence wounds the whole community.
May we honour Henry’s memory not by deepening the barriers between us, but by building understanding, seeking justice with humility, and working together for the common good. In sorrow, let us choose solidarity over suspicion, and hope over hatred.
Football should bring people together, not shut them out.
For the first time since the competition began, fans won’t be able to watch the Champions League final for free. That’s not right.
This is bigger than wanting to watch Arsenal in this historic final. It’s bigger than one club.
Hardworking people shouldn’t have to fork out for a subscription to watch this match.
I urge TNT Sports to reconsider and make the final next Saturday free to watch.
Well done Belgium 🇧🇪.
In late January 2024, Belgium's Parliament voted unanimously to ban the import of hunting trophies from endangered and threatened species. The vote reflected public opinion: 91 percent of Belgians oppose trophy hunting and 88 percent supported the ban.
Belgium's own Environment Minister was candid about the law's limits: "It's a political signal." Import licences could still be issued by other EU countries — and from 2014 to 2022, only around 500 out of 25,000 trophies imported across the EU entered through Belgium.
On December 18, 2025, Belgium's Constitutional Court upheld the law, rejecting a legal challenge and confirming protections for elephants, lions, rhinos, and dozens of other at-risk species. The law now stands on firm legal ground.
At the same time, South Africa — one of the world's largest trophy hunting destinations — has moved in the opposite direction, reopening its doors to trophy hunters as Belgium was closing its own.
An EU-wide import ban has not materialized. The European Parliament called for one in October 2022. Nothing has happened since. Loopholes in existing EU law still allow trophies to enter as "personal items" with the right permits.
Belgium's ban holds. The EU-wide gap does not.

@JonAshworth@NacoaUK Well done for the running and respect to you, on your stroke recovery approach. Good luck in your race in July, half marathon next?
🚨 Eliezer Mayenda tells me he predicted Sunderland would stay up in the Premier League this season - before a ball was even kicked!
🗣️ “I knew at the start of the season that we would stay up. We recruited really well - good dressing room - good players. I’m not surprised at what we’ve done or how we’ve played.
🗣️ “We’re where we deserve to be. Always Sunderland have been here and it’s a big achievement for us to be here now.”
🗣️ “Europe - if not this season, then next. If we do the work, we can achieve anything. What we did last season proved this is Sunderland. Nothing is impossible. We fight till the end and till the end anything can happen.”
📢 Big news: UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has announced landmark new government plans to treble the amount of surplus food made available for redistribution in the UK.
The move aims to tackle both food waste and food poverty at a time when many households continue to face cost of living pressures.
Our CEO, Catherine David, has welcomed the announcement:
“The Prime Minister’s announcement of a national programme to treble the redistribution of surplus food to people and communities across the UK is a vital step forward. WRAP supports the organisations on the front line of this critical work, as well as the incredible work of the King’s Coronation Food Project.
"I’m delighted WRAP was part of the discussions helping to shape this national ambition. Redistribution has a critical role to play, supporting stretched households while reducing the enormous financial and environmental cost of good food going to waste. We must also recognise the huge opportunity to prevent food waste from happening in the first place, particularly in our homes. Home is where most of the UK’s food waste occurs, which can cost a family of four an average of £1,000 – and we know that over 70% of people are worried by rising food prices.
"At a time when households are under growing financial pressure, tackling household food waste is one of the most immediate ways we can help people save money, strengthen food security and build resilience for the future.
"Today, with supply chains straining under geopolitical disruption and the cost of living continuing to rise, we must treat food as the precious resource it is. We cannot afford, economically, environmentally or socially, for wasting food to remain the norm. Whether in the fields, factories, shops, restaurants or our own kitchens, reducing food waste must become a shared national effort.
“As our world becomes an ever more unpredictable place, wasting food is a cost we can no longer afford to ignore and we are talking with key partners in government, the food sector, the media, philanthropists and innovators to tackle the food bills crisis in people's homes. We call on all partners to step forward and step up their efforts in the weeks and months ahead.”
In Kruger National Park, South Africa, veteran ranger Sipho Nkosi suffered a heart attack while on solo patrol. His vehicle was found empty, and search teams began looking for him.
What the park’s remote trail cameras revealed broke the hearts of everyone who saw the footage.
An old bull elephant — known to rangers as “Mnumzane” (Zulu for “Sir”) — had found Sipho’s body. For three full days and nights, the elephant refused to leave. He stood guard, gently touching the ranger with his trunk, chasing away hyenas and jackals that came too close, and even covering parts of the body with branches and leaves.
On the third night, the elephant was still there — visibly grieving, swaying slowly beside his fallen friend. Only when the full recovery team arrived with vehicles did Mnumzane finally step back, watching solemnly as they carried Sipho away.
Park officials later confirmed that Sipho had rescued this same elephant as a calf years earlier after poachers killed his mother. The elephant had never forgotten.
One colleague who viewed the footage whispered:
“He didn’t come to say goodbye. He came to make sure no one disrespected his brother.”
Mnumzane still visits the exact spot regularly. Rangers now leave fresh water and fruit there in honor of both.
The Stadium of Light is simply never going to ever be better than it was that night.
I still think about it. The desperation to delirium in two seconds, the scenes, the eruption, the joy. Every demon that defined the preceding years exorcised in a moment of pure elation. #SAFC
Miyako has spent over fifty years in solitary confinement in a tiny enclosure in Utsunomiya, Japan. Since she was brought to Japan aged 6 months, she has never had another Elephant as a companion.
Please sign this petition to retire Miyako to a sanctuary.

What is it that the Conservatives and Reform don’t like about a Labour government standing against unearned wealth?
What is it they don't like about raising money for our state schools, our hospitals, our police, and to lift children out of poverty?
Sir Keir.
No dodgy mates arrested for spying for Russia, we know who bought his house, no endless dodgy tax returns, no old schoolmates accusing him of anti-semitism, kicks out the wrong un’s from his party, no children from multiple partners, doesn’t suck up to sex offender Trump, tells Musk where to go, is as honest as the day is long.
If this is a problem for you then you need to give your head a wobble.
