The wind loads on the vehicle caused the booster to flex and dislodged the aluminum oxide plug that had sealed the damaged O-rings.

@Botched_Again @starsmurf77 @DerekdotSpace Nope. Multiple other orbiters had burn through on the o-rings. The oxidation layer is what protected in the failure. If you watch the Challenger launch video, you can see the burn through happen then seal itself.
