Without transformational changes to tackle the #ClimateCrisis, the 1.5˚C limit will be missed - with devastating consequences.
The Elders call on all leaders to implement the climate commitments they have made to accelerate the transition to a green sustainable energy future.
Prevention: one of the many reasons why we start early. With strong instruction and assessment in kindergarten we set kids up for success, and can identify the at-risk readers early enough to get them on track and avoid later intervention.
Only 14% of 8th graders read on their own almost every day, according to the NAEP--a new low.
One reason? A focus on teaching comprehension "skills" has drained the joy from reading.
And it hasn't boosted comprehension.

@ttct_ceo Great book and a thoughtful gift choice: help them build personal wellbeing habits of their choice, as well as habits for professional impact. 💝 #PersonCentred
Many colleagues are talking about the challenges we face with behaviour post-lockdown. Truancy, lateness to lessons and defiance can eat away at a school’s culture. The impact on pupils, staff and achievement can ultimately ruin the life chances of the most disadvantaged.
@tombennett71 I wonder if part of it is a desire to believe that behaviour is always more complex than it is. In truth, the majority of children respond well to life being predictable and consistent with boundaries that keep them safe and learning. Without this, it feels chaotic and unsafe.
@DTWillingham@nytopinion Solid article. It's amazing how many students still think that "studying" is just rereading your notes and textbook. We've written a lot about that here. I highly recommend that you & your students check out @brainscape! https://t.co/Wo6l3cY0vD
So proud of my mentee this morning! She told her first graders “the reason you are taking this test is so that I can know what to teach you next” It took the pressure off the student and provided a reason for the quick assessment! @swplains
@MovedtoLearn Every semester when she has complained about a class I have insisted she should go to office hours, and she never would. So glad she finally did!
"The smartphone brought about a planetary rewiring of human interaction... [It] transformed peer relationships, family relationships & the texture of daily life." So write @jean_twenge@JonHaidt. I try to discuss what that means for schools here: https://t.co/gSMnctOPYH
Today at the end of a class period some kids said that lecture in my class is like we are having a conversation not taking notes. They have no idea that made my day.
Silent lesson: if behaviour is really poor then start the next lesson with a silent assessment. It is vital to re-establish the norm of silent, hard work in the room. It is also far easier for the teacher to follow the behaviour system if everyone is supposed to be silent.
Observation – if they came to you they probably want your help. Repay that trust with your time. Remember that if behaviour is poor then there will be many different problems that need fixing – poor behaviour makes teaching harder! Focus on the most important steps.
