When oil was discovered in Turkana, and we went to survey the Lotikipi aquifer a year later, in 2013, the then deputy governor made it clear to me that in Turkana County all drivers must be local. That any contractor's drivers coming from Nairobi would have to hand over their vehicles to local drivers and go back.

I told him ours was a short-term mission, and in any case, we only had one driver whom we could not terminate without cause. Then I realised Turkana could only readily produce drivers. There was a serious local vocational, clerical, and professional skills gap. Told myself that if I were to be governor in Turkana, building local skills would be my priority; otherwise the county would not effectively absorb the devolution budgets allocated.

Local leaders leading Amu Tamu residents in protest for opportunities is fine. They should also consider what opportunities they have provided to prepare them to for the anticipated developments, other than asking what's in it for them!
