Did you know.. during the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin proposed the Timber Rattlesnake as a symbol of the indomitable American spirit? This serpent made its way into the Seal of the War Office and adorned military flags. Happy Independence Day from The Orianne Society!
I love finding box turtles in the yard! I've seen both of these before - the one on the left just since 2022, but the one on the right since 2015! (ID by shell pattern) 🐢👍😍
Just met up with Frog Hero Jimmie from the USFWS National Fish Hatchery in Edenton. I'll be taking these juvenile Gopher Frogs back to the wild this evening! Thanks @USFWS for helping with this imperiled species! 🐸🙂👍
Recent #burn at a private property that hadn’t been burned in over 20 yrs and was overgrown with turkey oaks. Conducting #prescribedfire in the growing season top-kills a greater percentage of oaks, allows more light to reach the ground and promotes biodiversity across the stand.
A juvenile #SpottedTurtle freezes among the leaf litter of a shallow pool, hoping to go undetected. This was one of many juvenile turtles found during this year’s population monitoring surveys. It’s always exciting to see these young #turtles!

As we shellebrate #WorldTurtleDay, we'd like to remind everyone that if you see a turtle trying to cross the road and want to help it out, make sure to:
Turtles Crossing! It’s nesting season and our nature neighbors are crossing roads on their quest for the perfect nest. You can help by slowing down and being vigilant. If you can do so safely, carefully move the turtle off the road in the direction it was heading. #WorldTurtleDay
